 Great Grower Champagne
"Champagne continues to be one of the most exciting regions in the world. This year I tasted a number of wines and producers that are new to me. The explosion of small, estate-bottled Grower Champagnes is one of the biggest reasons the region is so full of discovery."

"Apricot, peach, nutmeg, anise and spice notes flesh out in the NV Brut Cuvée Julie Grand Cru. Vinification in oak shapes the wine noticeably, especially in its sense of volume and pure texture. Still, all the elements are in the right place. There is plenty of vintage 2006 power and personality, but it is impossible to wonder what the Cuvée Julie might be like with a bit of a lighter hand in the cellar with respect to cooperage. Layers of fruit continue to blossom as this expressive Champagne opens up further with air. Cuvée Julie is equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all vintage 2006, aged in a combination of neutral and new oak. This bottle was disgorged in May 2013. Dosage was 7 grams/liter."

"(made from a single plot of 72-year-old vines and aged for around 40 months on its lees; disgorged June, 2013):  Light yellow-gold.  Highly perfumed lemon, orange and toasted nut scents are complicated by a suave floral quality.  Smoky and dry, offering intense lemon pith, orange and buttered toast flavors and a hint of hazelnut.  Becomes creamier with air and finishes with excellent clarity and smoky persistence."

"Pale yellow.  Smoky pear and peach pit on the nose, with subtle jasmine, iodine and honey qualities adding complexity.   Smooth and fleshy on the palate, but with a penetrating quality and intense minerality to the orchard fruit and citrus pith flavors.  Firm, focused and pure on the impressively long finish, which shows very good clarity and stony cut.  Offers a superb blend of richness and vivacity."
