Wine of the Year - 93 Points

"This is the newest of new wave Australian chardonnays from Martin Shaw of Shaw and Smith renown. It's a dry Aussie white from Tasmania's Coal River Valley that wears its clothes so lightly that you wonder at first if it's the emperor's new clothes. Looking at its pale gold hue and then nosing its delicately refreshing lemony aroma, it's hard not to be drawn into the artlessness of such intensely fresh and pure tectured citrusy fruit without the baggage of lees-stiring or oak-fermented nuttiness that strive for Burgundian imitation. This is no imitation but rather just itself, a confident, intense dry white in Australia-meets-Chablis mould, revealing the vineyard source and the purity of fruit that that entails, a Michaelangelo's David to the many Goliaths out there."

"Very light yellow hue, the aromas subtle and restrained - indeed, the wine is restrained in all respects. The bouquet has great subtlety and harmony of aromas, with elements of creamy lees, cashew and white peach, oak not at all evident even when very chilled. The palate is tremendously fine and long, with a great thread of natural-tasting acidity that runs the full length of the palate and draws out the finish. Seamless, beautifully poised and fine."

"Lean, restrained - almost muted. Lovely acidic line - very naturally integrated. Plenty of pithy structure too. Lime fruit - almost reminiscent of Riesling, in fact. Very well crafted, but very formative. Worth keeping an eye on."

"Deep-ish red with purple tinges, the aroma opens with a touch of meatiness, then airs to reveal superripe black cherry, a trace of foresty mystery with whiffs of vanilla and kirsch. It's rich and full and generous, with a style more towards the fruit-bomb end of the spectrum than a fine-boned, ethereal style. Easy to like, and its lovely sweet fruit will surely prove popular."

"The Pinot Noir vinified with 30% whole bunches in open fermenters and malolactic in barrel, is deep, suave, sappy and structured, beautifully textured to present - even in its youth - a new benchmark for Australian Pinot Noir."

"Aromatically much more developed than their Chardonnay. Rhubarb, redcurrant, absolutely gorgeous fragrance. Light body, no tannins. Slight stalky scent. Pixel perfect structure. Might not appeal to those who prefer the funkier side of Pinot, but as a classic Tasmanian style, this is an impressive debut."

About Tolpuddle Vineyard

It is rare that a completely new release comes to market with such universal acclaim. Tolpuddle Vineyards Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have been hailed as "a new benchmark for Australian Pinot Noir" and "a confident, intense dry white in Australia-meets-Chablis mold, revealing the vineyard source and the purity of fruit that that entails, a Michelangelo's David to the many Goliaths out there." Decanter Magazine, JancisRobinson.com and critics Huon Hooke, Anthony Rose, and Jamie Goode have all been effusive in their praise of the estate's inaugural vintage in 2012. Perhaps this should come as no surprise given the talents behind the project: Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith of Shaw + Smith fame.

Having already established benchmarks for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (not to mention great Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc) in the Adelaide Hills, a trip to Tasmania resulted in a love at first sight encounter with Tolpuddle Vineyard. Established in 1988 by Tony Jordan, Gary Crittenden and Bill Casimaty in Southern Tasmania's Coal River Valley, the vineyard has a long-established reputation as one of the island's greatest fruit sources: in fact, in 2006 it was awarded the first ever Tasmanian Vineyard of the Year Award. Located in a rain shadow created by mountains to the west, the Coal River Valley couples an extremely long and cool growing season with very low rainfall - providing almost perfect conditions for ripening Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In this superb setting the crack team consisting of Joint Managing Directors Shaw and Smith, Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz (a former Jimmy Watson trophy recipient while at Best's) and Viticulturist Ray Guerin (who recently received the 2013 Gourmet Traveller Viticulturalist of the Year) have produced two stunning new wines.

Bright and pure, Tolpuddle's wines are perfect expressions of the less-is-more ethic of the New Australia. The Chardonnay leaves behind the battonage and oak influence of the past and instead presents an electric minerality that reflects the silca and sandstone soils and the region's cool climate. The Pinot Noir is structured and beautifully aromatic. A portion of whole clusters was used in fermentation, contributing to the complex aromas of red fruit, earth, and spice as well giving the wine a firm backbone of tannin.  These are mightily impressive wines that demonstrate why Tasmania has suddenly become Australia's trendiest region.
