"A spectacular bargain from Villacreces, whose vineyards are situated next to the famous Vega Sicilia, the 2011 Pruno (90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 12 months in 2-year-old French oak barrels) boasts a dense purple color as well as sweet aromas of licorice, espresso roast, crème de cassis, blackberries, forest floor and spring flowers. This full-bodied, exceptionally concentrated, stunning red is a fabulous value. Consume it over the next decade."

About Finca Villacreces

The estate of Villacreces sits between the world renowned estate of Vega Sicilia and the Duero River. The estate was owned for years by the Cuadrado family, but in 2003 it was sold to the Antons of Bodegas Orben in Rioja, along with the Basque country restaurant Zaldiaran, one of Spain's most famous Michelin starred restaurants. Prior to the sale of the vineyards, fruit from the estate was sold to Peter Sisseck for use in Dominio de Pingus. It goes without saying that this terroir is at the absolute top of the quality pyramid!

Historically, the wines of Villacreces have been a compromise between the modern elements of Ribera and the classical rustic style of long ageing in older barrels. The dynamic young owners have taken over the wine from this amazing terroir in a slightly different direction. Shortening their time in oak to preserve the fruitiness, freshness and liveliness of the wines. If 'Pruno' is any indication, they have made a terrific decision. It has amazing intensity and complexity, a sure sign of this estate's steady ascent to the top of the "quality tree" in Ribera del Duero.
