"The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is deep, textured and impeccably balanced. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco, crushed rocks and spices blossom in the glass. Here, too, the overall sense of harmony is utterly captivating. A gorgeous wine, the 2008 stands out for its exceptional polish. The style is a bit deeper, richer and more layered than the Pelagrilli, but at the same time remains deeply marked by the prevalence of fruit from the northern side of Montalcino. In 2008 Pacenti lost about a third of his production from the south, which means this is are vintage in which the Brunello incorporated more fruit from the north than the south, roughly a 60/40 split. This is a fabulous effort in a vintage that proved to be full of challenges."

"Bright, direct and focused, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli stands out for its purity and depth. Tar, smoke, licorice and dark raspberries all take shape in a fruit-forward, juicy Brunello that should drink well pretty much upon release. The Pelagrilli isn't the most complex or layered Brunello to emerge from this site on the northern slopes of Montalcino, but it is drop-dead gorgeous from start to finish. Silky, polished tannins round things out in this utterly graceful, impeccable Brunello."

"The 2011 Rosso di Montalcino wraps around the palate with sensual dark red fruit, spices, vanillin and dried flowers. Rich, round and sensual, Giancarlo Pacenti's 2011 Rosso makes a compelling case for itself as the wine of the vintage. This is a terrific Rosso built on exceptional balance and polish. I tasted the 2011 from tank just prior to its bottling."

About Siro Pacenti

Identified by the Wine Spectator as 'the best winemaker in the appellation of Brunello di Montalcino', Giancarlo Pacenti took over running his family's 60 hectare estate in 1988. His wines are renowned for their combination of richness and structure.  They somehow remain remarkably fresh, pure, and elegent, despite being aged in French oak barriques rather than the large Slovenian oak botti many producers choose in the pursuit of freshness, purity and elegance.

The total estate includes 20 hectares of cereal crops and 20 hectares of olive groves and woods as well as 20 hectares of sangiovese grosso vineyards. Production is 60,000 bottles per year, divided between Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. The vines are spread across 7 plots, with 17 acres in the cooler zone NE of the town of Montalcino and 32 acres in the southern end of the appellation.  The two terroirs present contrasting characteristics which combine to build complexity in the finished wine:  the clay/limestone vineyards at Pelagrilli north east of the town contribute aroma and elegance; the red mineral-rich soils south of the famous Medieval abbey of Sant'Antimo provide power and fine tannins.

Siro Pacenti's Brunello is decidedly modern, emphasizing freshness and finesse rather than the massive tannin of the historical style.  The wines are beautifully balanced and designed to age gracefully.  The Rosso is legendary; not surprising, since it is made from fruit from the same vineyards as the Brunello. It is aged for six months in oak and one year in bottle.  It is one of the greatest values in all of Tuscany.
