"A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Carignan and 10% Syrah aged 10 months in second year French oak, the 2010 Les Crestes displays a deep blue/purple color as well as lovely floral, crushed rock/wet steel, blueberry and raspberry characteristics and a medium to full-bodied, pure, well-balanced mouthfeel. The wood was pushed to the background, leaving superb ripeness and texture as well as 16.3% natural alcohol. Drink this beauty over the next 7-8 years.
From one of Priorat's cooler micro-climates, the Les Crestes vineyards are located 350-400 meters above sea level, on the individualistic slate soils for which the area is known.

THE STORY
One of the most magical settings in Spain, Priorat lies in the rugged hills of Catalonia, near the Mediterranean coast just south of Barcelona.
Although Priorat has been producing wine since the time of the Romans, it did not gain international fame as a world-class winemaking region until the 1990's. Nowhere in Europe was the devastation of the 19th Century phylloxera epidemic more total, around 5000 hectares of vineyards were wiped out, and ancient villages became completely depopulated. Replanting did not begin until the 1950's. Since then the revival has been astonishing, and today there are 20 000 hectares of vines, predominantly Garnacha and Cariņena.
Priorat continues to gain international prestige: Robert Parker predicts that within a decade Priorat will surpass both Rioja and Ribera del Duero to become the top wine region in Spain.
Mas Doix has become increasingly renowned for wines of extraordinary purity, big rich and bold reds jam-packed with red/black fruits and exotic spices. The 'Les Crestes' is a blend of fruit from 50+ year old Garnacha and Cariņena vines and younger plantings (between 15-20 years of age); all sourced from the steep black slate and quartz soils known in the region as 'licorella'. The resulting wine is rich, glossy, but full of stony minerality. This is pure rock juice; and a fantastic bargain in a region known for high prices.
