"The 2009 Barolo Via Nuova is the base Barolo and is executed in the most classic fashion. The wine started as a single-vineyard expression, but Chiara later decided to blend fruit from various sites to reflect the methods used to make traditional Barolo. The wine is elegant and streamlined with bright accents of wild berry, mint and licorice. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

Chiara Boschis is one of the protagonists of an exciting all-female group of producers in Barolo. She purchased E. Pira & Figli in 1981 from an old winemaking family that, sadly, finished its genetic line with no heirs after the death of its last male member. Chiara says she never wanted to change the winery's name. Instead, she added her own in parentheses. All of her wines are simply stunning."

Chiara and grapesChiara Boschis is an incredible story. In a region where women winemakers are far from the norm she has built a collection of wines that is the envy of many. The E Pira e Figli estate was passed from father to son for centuries, until the 1980's when Luigi Pira passed away. At that time his sisters who inherited the vineyards felt that they could no longer maintain the estate. Hoping to keep the tradition alive they sold the estate to Chiara Boschis whose family had long been friends of the Piras. Crackling with energy and determination Chiara has proceeded to turn out one fantastic wine after another from her small parcels totaling 6 ha (including a small portion of the famed Cannubi vineyard). Small in stature, but exuding confidence and passion, Chiara produces some of the most refined and elegant wines in the region. These wines absolutely sparkle with life!
