 The Story
Podernovone vineyard at Gianni Brunelli

Gianni Brunelli was from an old Montalcino family. He dedicated his life to upholding the local traditions of great food, wine and hospitality. He became famous for all of the above at his legendary restaurant Osteria Le Logge in Siena "where customers are treated like friends and friends like gods".

Since 2008 the estate and restaurant have been run by Gianni's widow Laura. She is a great character in her own right, big-hearted and full of generosity and warmth. We look forward to seeing Laura every year at VinItaly and customers continually tell us how wonderful their visits are to both the estate and the restaurant - clearly Gianni's views on customer service live on in his absence!

The wines at Gianni Brunelli hail from two estate properties: Le Chiuse de Sotto, a 2 hectare vineyard (which contains a small plot of vines that were planted in 1947 by Gianni's father Dino) and a 4.5 hectare vineyard at Podernovone. The two sites offer distinctly different elements from different sub-zones within Montalcino. Le Chiuse, just north of the Montalcino town site, yields structured, airy components.  While Podernovone located a few kilometers south of the Montalcino results in warmer more generous components that still maintain a great deal of freshness from the calcareous/marl soils, and the altitude of 350 m. The blending of these components results in complex wines that are wonderfully generous, but also beautifully elegant and capable of considerable aging.
