"(made from fruit picked on October 22nd; 30% whole clusters and aged for 22 months in French oak, 40% of it new): Opaque ruby. Expansive, heady aromas of candied red and dark berries, pipe tobacco, potpourri and licorice, with a spicy nuance that gains strength with air. Stains the palate with sweet cherry-cola, cassis and floral pastille flavors supported by juicy acidity. The spicy quality comes back strong on a finish that features velvety tannins and a refreshingly bitter cherry pit quality."

When the Fellom family purchased their ranch at an elevation of 2,200 feet on the Montebello Ridge in 1929 it came with an established vineyard planted to Zinfandel. Between 1980-1983 they replanted and expanded this austere mountaintop site with Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings from the Charles Krug Winery in St Helena. The cane-pruned vines grow in soil that is a mosaic of franciscan chert, sandy loam, clay and serpentine, imparting structure and flavors unique to this historic winemaking region. The cool nights and airflow from the Pacific Ocean 16 miles away enable these 30 year old vines to produce balanced grapes with intense concentration and great varietal purity.

(made with 20% whole clusters and raised in 45% new French oak for 22 months; 12.8% alcohol): Glass-staining ruby. Highly energetic aromas of cassis, black raspberry, smoky minerals and sexy oak spices. Silky and sweet on entry, then vibrant and taut in the mid-palate, showing impressive density and energy to its dark berry, bitter cherry and mineral flavors. Finishes impressively long, with mounting tannins and a whiplash of sappy dark berry fruit. Very promising but definitely in need of more bottle age.

The meticulously groomed Bugay vineyard is chiseled into a volcanic ridge in Sonoma County's Mayacama range, with a specacular view of the eintire Russiona River Valley spreading far below. The cool breezes, rocky soil and naturally low yields lead to concentrated flavors and saturated color in the resulting wines. Lovingly farmed by the Bugay family, this is truly one of California's most beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards.

Duncan Arnot Meyers with his vineyard dog
|
Duncan Arnot Meyers grew up around wine. His father's best friend was Bernard Portet of Clos du Val and much of Duncan's youth was spent in Napa Valley. He was mentored by John Kongsgaard for 2 ½ years and worked side by side with Pax Malhe, northern California's cult Syrah specialist, till June 2008. The "Roberts" in Arnot-Roberts, is Nathan Lee Roberts, second generation master cooper. Nathan visits France several times a year selecting only the finest oak for this project. Their goal is to produce natural wines that express the uniqueness and beauty of their origin. In other words, sensibility applied to California wines that reflect their "terroir". |
