94+ POINTS - Wine Advocate(April 2012, Issue #200)

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is beautiful. A large-scaled, opulent wine, the 2007 captures the personality of the vintage while retaining fabulous balance and proportion. Layers of dark fruit, mocha, spices and new leather build effortlessly to the huge, palate staining finish. This is a fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

The Story

The parents and grandparents of Andrea and Marcello Mantengoli had been growers in Montalcino since 1933, but they never gave a second thought to becoming producers of Brunello. How could they? In their world, only aristocrats like the Biondi-Santis, Costantis, Barbis and the Franceschis at Il Poggione were worthy of making Brunello. Those notions vanished in the 1970s and 1980s when dozens of new Brunello estates were created, many by farmers like the Mantengolis.

By the time their son Andrea joined them in 1988, anything was possible. As the years passed, their one hectare of vines planted in the north east corner of Montalcino became nine, and gradually their "La Serena" Brunello became known outside of Tuscany.

'La Serena' comes from a spectacular high altitude vineyard 420m above sea level. The Tufo soil (formed from consolidated volcanic ash) gives the wine a pronounced minerally character; ageing in 'botte grande'-huge old oak vats - gives it a charming mellow roundness. This beautifully balanced wine may seem irresistible now, but it will certainly improve with age.
