A great look at the distinctive terroirs of Central Otago.

Felton Road's Cornish Point Vineyard is propped on a small peninsula with extremely close proximity to the water.  This creates a unique mesoclimate giving the vines great exposure to the southern sun and the cooling effects of the water nearby. The soil here is wind-blown loess over clay with a significant portion of calcium carbonate. Fruit from Cornish Point is some of the first to ripen and is often the first to be harvested by Felton Road.  The wine is packed with dense fruit and is broad and well structured, almost "Pommard" in style.

The Calvert Vineyard is located just 9km away (less as the crow flies). The gentle north facing slopes provides excellent cold air drainage to minimize the risk of frost. Here the soils have a shallow covering of loess over quartz sands, along with quartz and schist gravels. Again there is a considerable concentration of calcium carbonate.  The wines from Calvert have excellent texture and mouthfeel with subtle aromatics and nervy, fresh acidity. The tannins are fine, almost more "Gevery Chambertin" in style.

92+ POINTS - Wine Advocate

"The 2011 Cornish Point Pinot Noir has a pale to medium ruby-purple color with fragrant, crushed red cherry, wild strawberry and rose petal aromas laced with hints of cinnamon stick, Nutella on toast and lavender. Full-bodied and opulent in the mouth, it is already very expressive, showing a good fruit concentration, with spicy notes and framed by a medium level of fine tannins and refreshing acidity. It finishes long. It should drink best 2013 to 2018+.  " (October 2012 Issue #203)

92 POINTS - Stephen Tanzer

"Good medium red. Lovely perfumed nose offers raspberry, cherry, spices and flowers. Juicy and intense, with a captivating sweetness and inner-mouth aromatic lift to its red berry and spice flavors. Very fresh, structured, long pinot noir with a firm tannic spine to support further development in bottle." (September/October 2012)

91+ POINTS - Wine Advocate

"Medium deep ruby-purple color, the 2011 Calvert Pinot Noir reveals slightly muted notes of black cherries, cloves and earth with hints of nutmeg and iron ore. The palate is medium-bodied with a medium level of tight-knit, fine tannins and a medium to high level of acid. It has a long and earthy finish. Consider drinking it 2014 to 2018+."

THE STORY:

Felton Road has attained "cult-like" status in New Zealand since its first release in 1999. The Pinot Noirs show a richness and complexity that most other NZ examples have only hinted at - a quality of fruit effortlessly expressed. Blair Walter has secured his status amongst the elite Pinot Noir winemakers.

After considerable research the north facing slopes at the end of Felton Road, Bannockburn were identified as being amongst the warmest and most ideal sites for cultivating top-quality grapes in Central Otago. Planting began in 1992, and by 1994, 11 hectares were planted.
