Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide, 7th Edition:
Rated 5 Stars - Outstanding *****

"Those few growers/producers who have received five star ratings are those who make the world's finest wines, and they have been selected for this rating for two reasons: first, because they make the greatest wine of their particular viticultural region, and second, because they are remarkably consistent and reliable even in mediocre and poor vintages."

-Simon & Schuster 2008, pg.2

96 POINTS - James Suckling
"Complex aromas of red fruits, flowers and fresh mushrooms follow through to a full body, with ultra-fine tannins and intense fruit and bright acidity. Goes on for a long, long time. So juicy and fruity. Hints of bitter lemon rind. Give this two or three years more of bottle age." - January 25, 2012

THE HISTORY

Ciacci Piccolomini has a wonderful history dating back to the XVII Century.  The former owner of the property was Countess Piccolomini who utilized the 200 hectares for farming and agriculture and produced a bit of wine for herself. In 1985she passed away and willed the  estate and belongings to her loyal friend and assistant Giuseppe Bianchini without him knowing of it.  Imagine the surprise for Giuseppe when he was notified that the entire property he worked for most of his life for was now his responsibility. He respectfully took on the ownership very seriously and focused on building winery to honor the Countess.  The estate is still run to this day by the late Guiseppe's daughter and son, Luccia who manages the accounting and Paulo who manages the vineyards and winemaking.

Ciacci Piccolomini is one of the only estates in Montalcino which all the vineyards are in the Southern part of the region.  The wines from Ciacci Piccolomini give you a wonderful text book example of luscious Sangiovese Grosso fom the Southern hills of Montalcino.  The flagship vineyard Pianrosso is 29 hectares planted with entirely Sangiovese Grosso 240 - 360 meters above sea level.  The production is roughly 44,000 bottles per year.  Although the estate is not certified, the guidelines of organic agriculture are respected. Typically the vineyards are cropped at 25% less than normally accepted by the local wine laws of Montalcino.

Robert Parker on Ciacci Piccolomini:

"No estate has managed to bridge the gap between classic and contemporary styles as gracefully as Ciacci, which one could define as the most modern of the traditional producers or the most traditional of the modern producers when it comes to Brunello."

Simon & Schuster 2008, pg 888
