It's the Journey, not the Destination
January, 2014

Traditionally, with the beginning of a new year I talk about making plans instead of making resolutions. This year I would like to take it up a notch. Plans have goals, but there must be an underlying reason to establish that goal. The goal is the What, the reason is the Why. If you aren't motivated by the Why, the What will be difficult to accomplish. Think about it, if you look back on your accomplishments this year, which gave you the most pleasure, the most satisfaction?

As you establish your goals, write down the reasons to accomplish those goals. That will be your motivating force. You'll quickly be able to eliminate the goals that won't motivate you. Then give yourself a reasonable time frame - and double it. This will give you the freedom to deal with the unexpected - the necessary but annoying - without letting that push you off course.

What you will soon discover is that the journey is as important as the destination. The joy you feel will be determined by the effort you made.

Here's to a year of joy and accomplishment,
