President's Message
Happy New Year!

Now before you start worrying we're getting a bit loopy over here at Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio, our fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30, so we are just a few weeks into our new year.

And we have our work cut out for us as we strive to match our successes from 2013-14. While we're still tallying numbers and awaiting some verifications, we are sure we'll have provided programs in more than 1,250 classrooms and reached in excess of 26,000 students with our message of entrepreneurship, financial literacy and workforce readiness.

All of this is only possible because of the 1,100 volunteers who bring JA programs to life in the classrooms, and our corporate, foundation and individual donors who make it possible for us to provide this vital curriculum at no charge to the schools.

Your JANCO staff is very excited about all the possibilities that lie ahead for our organization as we strive to empower and inspire young people to own their economic success.

JA Celebrates
Golden Anniversary
Members of the local community and those from the corporate, nonprofit and education world gathered at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn on Wednesday, June 4 to celebrate Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio's 50 years of sparking student success. Since its founding in Akron, Ohio in 1964, JA has served more than 550,000 local students through K-12 programs focused on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness.

Initially known for the JA Company Program, an after-school enterprise in which students marketed and manufactured a product and sold stock in their company, Junior Achievement has since expanded the scope of its program offerings significantly, developing curricula designed to help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace.

Former JA Board Chair Ryan Waldron of Goodyear
In addition to commemorating Junior Achievement's milestone anniversary, the event served as the organization's Annual Meeting during which a new board chair and board members were elected. Donald Miksch, Vice President and Client Advisor for FirstMerit Bank, replaced Ryan Waldron of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as the Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio Board of Directors Chair.

New members voted to the Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio Board for a three year term ending in 2017 included:  Michael Babb of Talmer Bank, Tami Boulder, Ph.D. of SS&G, Frank Comunale of Summit County Council, Richard Day of Kent State University, Tim Robinson of Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, Brian Steere of Steere Enterprises, Kate Tonti-Senior Communications Specialist and Sean Witmer of FedEx Custom Critical.

Historical JA Company Program Items
Several local companies and foundations provided sponsorship for current JA students from the National Inventors Hall of Fame STEM School, Mason Community Learning Center, Norwayne Elementary School, Norwayne Middle School, Leggett Community Learning Center, Hudson High School and Wooster High School to attend the event. Organizations providing student sponsorships included:  Bridgestone Americas Tires, The Burton D. Morgan Foundation, Goodwill Industries, Huntington National Bank, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, FirstEnergy Corporation, ExxonMobil Chemical and PNC Bank.

According to Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio's president Michael Gaffney, while celebrating the past success of the organization is important, it is vital that Junior Achievement continues to look toward the future.  "All of us involved with Junior Achievement are excited about what the future holds. The need for what we offer certainly isn't diminishing-every survey of employers shows they can't find enough workforce-ready candidates. There are fewer and fewer jobs available at big companies, so entrepreneurship will hold the key for many young people. And financial literacy will be vital for everyone, no matter where they are on the economic scale" said Gaffney.

Empower the Future: Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio 50th Anniversary
JA Alumni
The celebration of Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio's 50 anniversary has served as a powerful reminder of the influence of JA programs and the mentor-student connection. Over the past year, we have had the good fortune to reconnect with a number of former JA students and witness firsthand the lasting impact of Junior Achievement.

In April, we had the pleasure of meeting Terrance Graham, a Barberton native who participated in the first JA Company Program in Barberton in the 1950's. Now 80, Mr. Graham looks back on his JA days fondly and holds the JA volunteers and sponsors from the American Weather Seal Company and Goodyear in the highest regard.
Mr. Graham with his JA Company Program product

While serving as President for his JA company, the JA Woodworkers, Mr. Graham oversaw the production and sale of handcrafted wooden house number signs. By utilizing smart business practices, such as sourcing scrap wood from Barberton-area businesses at no cost to the company, the JA Woodworkers was the only group participating in the JA Company Program that secured a return for the stakeholders that year.

Mr. Graham sourced the wooden number cutouts used on the house signs from Barberton Hardware, where he would later go on to make his career. Though prior to the official formation of Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio, Mr. Graham's story demonstrates the lifelong impression JA leaves on its alumni.

JA staff also had the pleasure of meeting former JA student Lori Reinbolt who currently serves as President of the Orrville Chamber of Commerce. Throughout her academic career, Ms. Reinbolt participated in a variety of JA programs including Project Business in the 8th grade, Applied Economics in 11th grade and traditional in-class JA in 10th, 11th and 12th grade.

"Looking back, it was JA that first introduced me to business concepts and provided me a basic understanding of the Free Enterprise system.  The "out of class" education that I gained through the hands-on, practical experience with the traditional JA Company Program helped me in my college business classes and gave me the confidence to pursue leadership positions as a freshman at Ashland University and throughout my professional life" said Ms. Reinbolt.

In addition to active participation in the JA Company Program her sophomore, junior and senior years, Ms. Reinbolt competed for and was named Ms. Executive of the Akron Area for two consecutive years. "Winning the title of Miss Executive required a test...and an interview with top level executives at the Firestone Headquarters" shared Ms. Reinbolt. "Preparing for and going through the process of interviewing for this contest was perhaps the most valuable of all my JA experiences."

When asked about the importance of JA to today's young people, Ms. Reinbolt remains convinced of the great value of JA and the need for quality workforce readiness and economic education in our communities:  "JA is a wonderful program that has brought business leaders and students together for 50 years.  We don't need to reinvent the wheel, but we do need to do a better job connecting the workforce needs of the industries in our communities with the education and job preparation of our young people. I see a growing disconnect between the reality of the workforce and our schools.  JA inspired me to succeed in life and to contribute to my community.  I'm confident that JA will continue to inspire the next generation of leaders."

With the support of our dedicated alumni and corporate, community and foundation partners, we look forward to the next 50 plus years of serving the young people of North Central Ohio.
NEW SURVEY REVEALS GENDER GAP AMONG TEENS PLANNING TO ATTEND COLLEGE

Junior Achievement USA (JA) and The Allstate Foundation's 2014 Teens & Personal Finance Survey reveals a gender gap among teenagers' views and habits on budgeting, college plans and future earning power.

Junior Achievement USA has conducted the Teens & Personal Finance Survey for the last 15 years, partnering with The Allstate Foundation since 2005. The survey found that 91 percent of teen girls, ages 13-18, plan to attend college after they graduate from high school, compared with 86 percent of teen boys.

"It is important for young women and men to understand their options-and the financial implications-for continuing their education," said Michael Gaffney, President of Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio. "As an organization that strives to empower all young people to own their economic success, JA will continue to help position students for success whether that means attending college, vocational school or another educational path."

Of teens planning to attend college, girls may be giving more thought to how they financially will achieve their goals. Seventy-nine percent of teen girls (ages 13-18) plan to seek scholarships/grants to pay for college, compared to 66 percent of boys 13-18.
Nationally, 66 percent of teen girls say the rising costs of college have changed their decisions about their future college plans (versus 57 percent of teen boys), and 40 percent of teen girls say they are considering staying in-state to save money on tuition costs (versus 30 percent of teen boys).

Other key findings from the survey include:

-    Parents are more likely to give their sons an allowance than their daughters. Sixty-seven percent of boys compared with 59 percent of girls say they get an allowance from their parents.
-    When it comes to financial literacy, 21 percent of boys and 19 percent of girls say their parents/guardians do not spend enough time talking to them about saving money. Twenty-one percent of girls and 19 percent of boys say their parents don't spend enough time talking to them about managing money and creating a budget.
-    Forty-three percent of teen boys think they will make more than $35,000 at their first jobs, compared with 35 percent of teen girls.

An executive summary of the 2014 Junior Achievement USA/Allstate Foundation Teens & Personal Finance Survey is available at www.juniorachievment.org.
