Pick of the Week
Rialto Pictures and Laemmle Theatres are proud to announce the release of a new restoration of the Marcel Carné and Jacques Prévert masterpiece LE JOUR SE LÈVE, starring Jean Gabin, Jules Berry, and Arletty. The 4K restoration from Studiocanal includes footage censored by the Vichy government during WWII, and not seen since.
As factory worker François (Gabin) reflects on the circumstances of love, rivalry, and betrayal that have led to his dire stand-off with the police, the story of his love affairs with pretty florist Françoise (Jacqueline Laurent) and stage performer Clara (Arletty) unfolds in a series of flashbacks. With constant interference from sleazy dog trainer Valentin (Berry), François navigates his desires and expectations, which leads to a fateful encounter with his rival.
This new 4K restoration (projected in 2K) is both a return to Carné's original vision, integrating scenes and credits cut by Vichy censors - including Arletty's nude emergence from the shower and a scene considered "anti-fascist" at the time - and a revitalization of the image and sound. In addition, the names of cinematographer Curt Courant and production designer Alexandre Trauner (Children of Paradise, L'Atalante, The Apartment), both Jewish, have been restored to their proper places in the opening credits. One of the great masterpieces of French cinema, LE JOUR SE LÈVE is now finally available in its complete form.

Landmark Pick of the Week
Jon Stewart, host and executive producer of "The Daily Show," makes a remarkable screenwriting and directing debut with Rosewater. It tells the story of Tehran-born Maziar Bahari (Gael García Bernal, The Motorcycle Diaries), a broadcast journalist with Canadian citizenship living in London, who left his pregnant wife (Claire Foy) in the UK and returned to Tehran to cover the controversial 2009 Presidential election. At great personal risk Bahari obtained and submitted camera footage to the BBC of the unfolding street riots that protested the election "results." Soon afterwards he was arrested by Revolutionary Guard police, led by a man identifying himself only as "Rosewater" (Kim Bodnia), who proceeded to torture and interrogate the journalist over the next 118 days. Meanwhile Bahari's wife led an international campaign from London to have her husband freed, and Western media outlets including "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" continued to keep the story alive.

Film Forum Los Angeles

Los Angeles Filmforum presents
At the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028
Jesse McLean in person from Iowa City, Iowa!
Los Angeles premieres!
Filmforum is thrilled to host Iowa-based filmmaker Jesse McLean for her first solo screening in Los Angeles. McLean's work explores the complexities of mediated human behavior and interaction as well as the confounding, often exaggerated emotions that accompany these experiences. Employing appropriated home movies, internet videos, television shows, and archival materials, McLean redefines our interchange with various forms of media. Through expert use of collage, each of McLean's videos subtly question viewers' associations with the information we consume daily while reimagining a world in which everyday media tropes are hijacked and transformed. Join us for a survey of McLean's work wrought with emotional twists and turns, querying our relationships to each other, to ourselves, and to the mediated material world that defines us.
"[Jesse McLean's] films ask her audience to see themselves as active participants in the media they consume and not just as passive voyeurs." Underground Film Journal
Tickets: $10 general admission; $6 students (with ID)/seniors; free for Filmforum members. Tickets available in advance

A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT
Strange things are afoot in Bad City, the Iranian ghost town, home to prostitutes, pimps and other sordid souls. A lonely and alluring female vampire (Sheila Vand) stalks the town's most unsavory inhabitants. Her path also crosses that of a hunky, perhaps honest guy, and an unusual love story begins to blossom... blood red. Cinema's first Iranian Vampire Western basks in the pleasure of pulp, a joyful mashup of genre, archetype and iconography spanning spaghetti westerns and comic books, and amped by an electric soundtrack mixed with Iranian rock, techno and Ennio Morricone-inspired riffs. If Sergio Leone and David Lynch had an Iranian rock 'n' roll baby, and then Nosferatu came and babysat for them....
Writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour will appear in person on Saturday, November 22 for a Q&A after the 7:30pm show and to introduce the 9:50pm show. She will also appear on Sunday, November 23 for a Q&A after the 5:00pm show, and for an introduction to and a Q&A after the 7:30pm show.
