Pick of the Week

Gaspard (Melvil Poupaud), a recent university graduate, arrives at the seaside in Bretagne for three weeks' vacation before starting a new job. He's hoping his sort-of girlfriend, the fickle Lna (Aurlia Nolin), will join him there; but as the days pass, he welcomes the interest of Margot (Amanda Langlet, the titular character from Rohmer's PAULINE AT THE BEACH), a student of ethnology working as a waitress for the summer. Things start to get complicated when the spoken-for Margot encourages Gaspard to have a summer romance with her friend, Solne (Gwenalle Simon), and he complies. When Lna turns up, and scheduling complications abound, Gaspard will have to make a choice...

Rohmer's characteristically light touch allows his characters to discourse on love and friendship, even as their body language complicates and even contradicts their words. Diane Baratier's cinematography perfectly captures the languor of youth and the feeling of a French beach vacation--the sea, the sunlight and the lovely surroundings convey the openness of a world of possibilities faced by these young people.

First time in U.S. Theatrical Release! New HD restoration!

Pick of the Week

Set in the 1920s on the opulent Riviera in the south of France, Woody Allen'sMagic in the Moonlight is a romantic comedy starring Colin Firth (The King's Speech) as Stanley Crawford, a master magician who tries to expose psychic medium Sophie Baker (Emma Stone) as a fake. Persuaded by his life-long friend (Simon McBurney), Stanley goes undercover on a mission to a Cte d'Azur mansion in order to debunk the alluring young clairvoyant, who is staying there with her mother (Marcia Gay Harden). From his very first meeting with Sophie, Stanley dismisses her as an insignificant pip-squeak who he can unmask in no time. To his great surprise and discomfort, however, Sophie accomplishes numerous feats of mind-reading and other supernatural deeds that defy all rational explanation, leaving him dumbfounded-and wondering whether Sophie's powers could actually be real.

Curator Hannah Piper Burns in person!  Loads of Los Angeles premieres!

People often ask what characterizes the experimental work coming out of the Pacific Northwest. In the three years that I've been programming this work, I haven't found a cocktail party or elevator blurb that covers the range I've seen, but with the help of the amazing artists that surround me, I have made some observations:

We are appropriators, investigators, and performers. Our politics start with the personal. We make within our means. We collaborate. We are students and professors who show together. We inspire each other. Both in our sincerity and in our absurdity, we are unabashed. We may be short on running times, but we are long on style.

It's my hope that most, if not all, of the artists and films in this program will be unfamiliar to this audience. Enjoy this sampling of feral fare from the wilds of Oregon and Washington!  Hannah Piper Burns

HAPPY CHRISTMAS

A budding novelist named Kelly (Melanie Lynskey), her film director husband Jeff (writer/director Joe Swanberg) and their two-year-old son live a peaceful existence in Chicago. But when Jeff's irresponsible younger sister, Jenny (Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air), comes to live with them after a breakup, things start to change. Jenny begins a rocky relationship with a baby sitter-cum-pot dealer (Mark Webber), and she and a friend, Carson (Lena Dunham, "Girls"), instigate an evolution in Kelly's life, as her career and her relationship with her husband begin to grow in new directions. But are they welcome ones? In Happy Christmas, filmmaker Swanberg (Drinking Buddies) explores both sibling relationships and the choices women face in young families. Using his unique improvisational technique, Swanberg creates a dramatic experience that results in a natural, relatable peek into his characters' lives, filled with an engaging warmth and the actors' own natural sense of humor.
