SHADOW DANCER

Single mother Collette McVeigh is a Republican living in Belfast with her mother and hardliner IRA brothers. When she is arrested for her part in an aborted IRA bomb plot in London, an MI5 officer (Mac) offers her a choice: lose everything and go to prison for 25 years or return to Belfast to spy on her own family. With her son's life in her hands, Collette chooses to place her trust in Mac and return home, but when her brothers' secret operation is ambushed, suspicions of an informant are raised and Collette finds both herself and her family in grave danger.

THE EAST
The suspenseful and provocative espionage thriller The East stars co-writer Brit Marling (Sound of My Voice, Another Earth) as former FBI agent Sarah Moss, who's starting a new career at an elite private intelligence firm that ruthlessly protects the interests of its A-list corporate clientele. Handpicked for a plum assignment by the company's head honcho, Sharon (Patricia Clarkson), Sarah goes deep undercover to infiltrate The East, an elusive anarchist collective seeking revenge against major corporations guilty of covering up criminal activity. Determined, highly-trained and resourceful, Sarah soon ingratiates herself with the group, overcoming their initial suspicions and joining them on their next action or "jam." But living closely with the intensely committed members of The East, Sarah finds herself torn between her two worlds as she starts to connect with anarchist Benji (Alexander Skarsgård) and the rest of the collective, and awakens to the moral contradictions of her personal life.

Director/co-writer Zal Batmanglij and actress Ellen Page will appear in person on Friday, May 31 for a Q&A after the 7:20pm show at the Landmark.

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and stars Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso and Moises Arias will appear in person on Saturday, June 1 for a Q&A after the 7:30pm show at the Landmark

PICKS OF THE WEEK

The Los Angeles Film Festival kicks off this Saturday featuring over 20 new films from around the world which cover the Jewish experience.

Saturday is also the kick-off of this year's Last Remaining Seats series and while TO CATCH A THIEF is sold out. There are still seats remaining for other shows in the series. It's a great time to watch classic films in classic movie palaces.

Stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen recently left us but his amazing works remain and on Thursday, the American Cinematheque at the Aero opens THE KING OF STOP-MOTION: RAY HARRYHAUSEN REMEMBERED featuring some of his best works that still hold up in this digital age.

Finally, if your mood for something a little different, I highly recommend AMERICAN MARY which begins a week-long run this Friday at the TCL Chinese Theatres. Filmmakers Jen & Sylvia Soska and star Katharine Isabelle (who gives an amazing portrayal as a young medical student slow descending into madness) will be in attendance for Friday's 7:45pm show.

The Oberhausen Short Film Festival Tour International Competition 2012

At the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood

In this program of selections from Oberhausen's International Competition, six documentary and experimental video works (for the most part) take a close look at human and animal behavior. In Finland, the elk and the elk whisperer stalk each other until the final showdown, while Elodie Pong playfully riffs on the term "Ersatz" in a dialogue between two people. In Snow Tapes, winner of the Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen, stones are cast at young Palestinians. What is fiction here, and what is documentary? The diversity of current international short film production is just waiting to be discovered in this program.

ONE TRACK HEART: The Story of Krishna Das

In 1970, a young musician named Jeffrey Kagel walked away from the American dream of rock 'n' roll stardom-turning down the lead singer slot in the band that would become Blue Oyster Cult. He sold all his possessions and moved from the suburbs of New York to the foothills of the Himalayas in search of happiness and a little-known saint named Neem Karoli Baba (or Maharaji). One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das follows Kagel's journey to India and back, his struggles with depression and drug abuse, and his eventual emergence as Krishna Das-the world-renowned spiritual teacher, chant master and Grammy-nominated recording artist.
