FREE THE MIND

What is consciousness, really? How does it manifest in the brain and body? And is it possible to physically change the brain solely through mental practices? In 1992 Professor Richard J. Davidson, one of the world's leading neuroscientists, met the Dalai Lama, who encouraged him to apply the same rigorous methods he used to study depression and anxiety to the study of compassion and kindness.

John Osborne, National Director, faculty, and teacher trainer for Project Welcome Home Troops, who is featured in the film, FREE THE MIND, will participate in Q&A's after the 7:30 PM screenings Friday-Sunday, May 17-19, at the Music Hall and after the 11 AM screenings Saturday, May 18 at the Playhouse 7 and Sunday, May 19 at the Monica 4.

Pick of the Week

Frances Ha, a modern comic fable from Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale), explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure and redemption. Frances (co-writer Greta Gerwig), the exuberant 27-year-old heroine, is always on the move without ever seeming to get anywhere. The truth is she knows exactly where she wants to go, she's just unwilling to make the kind of compromises that might get her there.

Co-writer and star Greta Gerwig will appear in person at the Landmark on Saturday, May 18 for a Q&A after the 7:40pm show, and Sunday, May 19 for a Q&A after the 5:30pm show.

Directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel will appear in person at the Landmark on Friday, May 17 for a Q&A after the 8:00pm show.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

Two documentaries and their flamboyant subjects, A PORTRAIT OF JASON at the New Beverly and DECEPTIVE PRACTICE: THE MYSTERIES AND MENTORS OF RICKY JAY at the Nuart, showcase how documentaries can be every bit as entertaining and riveting as a narrative film.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICE: THE MYSTERIES AND MENTORS OF RICKY JAY

Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay is a mesmerizing journey into the world of modern magic and the small circle of eccentric geniuses who mastered it. At its center is the multitalented Ricky Jay, a best-selling author and historian, an acclaimed actor (House of Games), a leading collector of antiquarian books and artifacts, but above all a conjurer capable of creating a profound sense of wonder and disbelief.Deceptive Practice traces the story of Ricky's achievement, from his precocious apprenticeship in Brooklyn, beginning at age 4, with his grandfather Max Katz, as well as Al Flosso, Slydini, and Cardini (all among the best magicians of the 20th century), to his extraordinary one-man shows on Broadway.

Star and subject of film Ricky Jay, producer/director/editor Molly Bernstein and producer/co-director Alan Edelstein will appear in person on Friday, May 17 for a Q&A after the 7:30pm show. They will also appear on Saturday, May 18 for a Q&A after the 7:30pm show.
