Pick of the Week

Inspired by actual events, the suspense thriller The Iceman follows notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon, Take Shelter) from his early days in the mob until his arrest for the murder of more than 100 men. Appearing to be living the American Dream as a devoted husband and father, in reality Kuklinski is a ruthless killer-for-hire. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession.

Director/co-writer Ariel Vromen will appear in person at the Landmark on Saturday, May 4 for a Q&A after the 7:30pm show.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

This Thurday, the Aero Theatre kicks of a mini-retrospective of Director William FRIEDKIN's works with THE FRIEDKIN CONNECTION: THE FILMS OF WILLIAM FRIEDKIN. Mr. Friedkin is scheduled to appear at all 3 double features. Arguably his most famous film, THE EXORCIST, will not screen as part of that series but Mad Monster Magazine will be hosting a 40th Anniversary Screening on May 13th at the TCL Chinese Theatre. Star Linda Blair is scheduled to appear.

Los Angeles Filmforum and MOCA presents
TIME AS MATERIAL

At MOCA Grand Avenue's Ahmanson Auditorium

NOTE THE CHANGE IN DATE, TIME AND LOCATION!

By the middle of last century, many artists stopped using their materials to represent something and instead focused in on the materials themselves: paint was only paint, metal only metal, etc. Likewise, artists working in cinema ceased trying to represent time and began to work with it directly. Through diverse means and subjects, each film in this program explores time as a material. From Andy Warhol's slow cinema, at once luscious and austere, to the crystalline precision of Ernie Gehr's formalism, this program of challenging and often surprisingly humorous works presents a new way of thinking about how cinema came to consider time itself.

KISS OF THE DAMNED

With her narrative feature debut, writer/director Xan Cassavetes (Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession) has crafted a stylish, bloody and erotic supernatural tale. Kiss of the Damned is the story of Djuna (Joséphine de La Baume), a beautiful vampire who tries to resist the advances of the handsome, human screenwriter Paulo (Milo Ventimiglia), but eventually gives in to temptation. When her troublemaker sister Mimi (Roxane Mesquida) arrives unexpectedly, Djuna's love story is threatened and the whole vampire community becomes endangered. Recalling the best and smartest of racy European genre films from the 1960s and 1970s, Kiss of the Damned is the story of vampires trying to find the meaning in everlasting life, and thrillingly contrasts the loveliness and brutality of classic vampire tales.

Writer/director Xan Cassevetes will appear in person on Friday, May 3 for Q&As after the 7:30pm and 9:55pm shows, and Saturday, May 4 for a Q&A after the7:30pm show.
