Hallows Ritual & Celebration
November 1, 2014
"The seasons and all their changes are in me."
--Henry David Thoreau

The Wheel of the Year spins and we come together to honor the turning of the seasons and the Earth's never-ending cycles of life.

At this time of year we remember, and honor, our beloved ancestors and the lives they lived. We call on them for guidance and support in all our endeavors.

As we, once again, begin our descent into the season of winter and prepare ourselves for the coming dark, we give thanks for the bounty of the Earth's harvest that will carry us through the dark times and into the rebirth of Spring.

We remind ourselves it is time to Slow Down and synchronize our internal rhythms with the rhythm of the Earth. At this time when the veil between the worlds is thin and permeable, we welcome the nurturing dark of winter and honor those who have gone before us and connect to the healing power of the Earth.

Temple of the Goddess

All Hallows Celebration & Ritual

This is the new year, the time when the veil between this world and the spirit world is at its thinnest. It marks the onset of a darker, more introspective time of year. The theme of Hallows Eve is honoring darkness, memory of the dead, communication with the spirit world, and purification for the future.

The theme for our 2014 ritual productions is Magic. This year is dedicated to an exploration into Magic and the lessons of transformation found in the Earth and Her seasons. With each Turn of the Wheel we embrace the inherent potential of magic and possibility.

As we slow down and descend into the dark of winter,
we call upon the magic and power of Gestation, the development of something over a period of time . . . development, evolution,
formation, emergence, origination.

Gestation and hibernation are a great act of gathering power and information. Seeds resting in the dark soil of the Earth Mother are not inactive, they are developing, taking in nutrients,
reshaping their future into what they will become.

As Pagans, our teachings are found in nature, the seasons, cycles, and the cosmos . . . all of which are in a constant state of flux. We have no Bible, Torah, or Bhagavad Gita . . . but in nature we find the reflection/lessons for how to grow, live consciously, and create the life we deserve.

For Pagans, Earth magic is a given. What we are bringing to our ritual theatre celebrations in 2014 are mythic lessons of the magic that powers the changing seasons.

Temple of the Goddess' Mythic Players invite you to join us in 2014 as we journey into the realm of magic . . . the magic of the Earth, the alchemy of seasons, and the magic of our own focused intentions as we grow the garden of our lives.

With Crow as a mythic guide, our ritual theatre celebrations in 2014 have been mythic lessons about our own inherent magic when we connect to the cyclical growth of the seasons and the spiritual tools of intention, passion, gratitude, and gestation.

As a Shamanic totem, Crow dwells outside the realm of time and space with the power of shape-shifting and transformation. Crow, guardian of ceremonial magic and healing, knows the unknowable mysteries of creation and is the guide to change in consciousness that will bring about a new reality. Crow offers the courage to enter the darkness of the void, to create form and matter from the magic of our conscious intentions.

Hallows is a magical time when the veil between the worlds is thin and our ancestors surround us with their love, support, and inspiration. It also marks the descent into winter. Nurtured by the dark unknown where all possibility is available, we gestate and hibernate in Mother Earth. Our dreams and goals gather power and information, developing, taking in nutrients, evolving, forming, and reshaping our future.

Our Hallows myth is a modern retelling of the Germanic folk tale of Mother Hulda. In Old World folklore Mother Hulda rules the weather; she chooses sunshine, snow, or rain. But her deepest wisdom lies in her eternal spinning and weaving.

Like the Fates in Mediterranean myths, Mother Hulda spins the threads of our destiny. However, She does not weave the rich tapestry of our lives . . . that we co-create with Her. Her Wisdom can guide us, but it is the threads of our focus and attention, our magic, which we weave into our Life's Tapestry.

Goddess scholar, Dr. Marija Gimbutas names Hulda (or Holda, Holla, Holle) as having originally been an ancient Germanic supreme goddess who predates most of the Germanic pantheon, including deities such as Odin, Thor, Freya, and Loki, continuing traditions of pre-Indo-European Neolithic Europe.

When Christianity slowly replaced Scandinavian paganism during the early Middle Ages, many of the old customs were gradually lost or assimilated into Catholic tradition. By the end of the High Middle Ages, Scandinavian paganism was almost completely marginalized and blended into rural folklore, in which the character of Mother Hulda eventually survived.

In our Hallows myth,  Magda, our young heroine, gathers the magical threads of the seasons which she has spun throughout this Wheel of the Year. In the Spring Magda spun a green thread with the magic of intention. At Summer, she spun a red thread with the thrumming power of passion, and at Autumn Magda spun a rich thread of golden yellow filled with all the magic that comes with Gratitude.

At this time of growing dark, we gather as a community to explore the power of gestation and learn about the task which awaits us in the winter. Though deep and dark, we are guided by the wisdom of Mother Hulda and the lessons of Magda's journey into the magical light of twilight. In harmony with the slow, deliberate rhythm of the Earth, we diligently begin to vision and weave the pattern of our 2015 life's tapestry with the precious threads of the season's magic.

Our evening of ritual theatre opens with Requiem by Eliza Gilkyson, a processional in honor of our ancestors . . . in the dark night of our soul bring some comfort to us all. As you enter the sanctuary, place your ancestor candle, photo or memento on the altar. Prepare yourself to go into sacred space.

Temple of the Goddess, and The Mythic Players, invite you to join us for an evening of art and ritual theatre in celebration of Hallows Eve, and the Earth's never-ending cycles and seasons.

Lady of the Silver Wheel

by Damh the Bard

Snug in the Winter's light

A Silver Wheel turns in the night,

Ancient hands guide a thread,

Keeping it true, keeping it tight,

As it spins, fate it begins,

To opens its eyes,

Lady of the Moon, of the Stars,

In the Moon Light I hear you sing.

Chorus

Lady of the Silver Wheel,

Lady of the Silver Wheel,

Mother Hulda,

Lady of Changes you spin the Web of Life.

Gather up every thread,

Weave them together, join them as one,

The spindle begins to turn,

A soul's new journey has begun

On the Earth, with every birth,

So the web that joins together all life

Is as one, daughter and son,

Animal, human, old and young.

Autumn begins to fall,

And the Moon wanes and seasons grow cold.

We all hear the Raven's call,

Some while young, others grow old,

Oh she sings, the last chorus begins,

With a voice as gentle as Winter's Lace,

A new thread through the wheel it is fed,

Joy to those that seek her wisdom.
