In Her boat of love
I lay down my heart
And lift my arms in prayer:
Oh Isis-Aphrodite!
Oh constantly coming One!
Take me in Your winged boat
And let us sail from sea to sea
For I am coming home.

circle of life memorial
As the Wheel of Life spins, the seasons bear witness to the covenant of the Goddess, Her promise of life and the never-ending cycle of birth, death, and renewal. To each of us in times of both joy and sorrow She sweetly whispers, "Be not afraid of my cycles and embrace the changing nature of all things, the permanence within the impermanence. The seasons bear witness to this promise I manifested for you. For surely, the darkness and death of winter is followed by the light and renewal of spring."

Xia Ordained by, Laura at Isis Oasis, October 18, 1997. This edition of Temple of the Goddess' newsletter is dedicated to my sister, friend, mentor, and elder, Laura Janesdaughter, who crossed the veil on May 27th, 2013 to rest in the arms of her beloved Isis.

Laura ordained me into the Temple of Isis in 1997 and our first beach ritual in 1994 was the first goddess ritual that I could include my son, Zachary Tatum-Nolan and his father Roger Nolan. This event was deeply influential in my vision to create Temple of the Goddess as a spiritual organization to include boys, men, and families.

Even today, one of the highlights for me, at our temple ritual Sabbats is seeing the families . . . the men and boys who have found a place in the lap of the Mother.

There are two events scheduled to honor the life of our dear sister, a Life Celebration and Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 7:30 p.m., and a beautiful Isis beach ritual on Sunday morning October 6th at 9:30 a.m. Please see below for location and details. Many dear Goddess sisters are coming from all parts of the country to celebrate Laura's life. Please join us for either, or both, of these gatherings.

My love and blessings to you all, Rev. Xia

Many Peoples, Many Faiths
(Text excerpted. Images added.)
by Robert S. Ellwood Emeritus & Barbara A. McGraw

The Temple of Isis in California is a Goddess Movement group that involves both men and women.  It is part of the Fellowship of Isis, an international group with headquarters in Clonegal, Ireland, founded by Olivia Lawrence and Pamela Durdin-Robertson in 1976, and has about 15,000 members in the United States, Great Britain, Ireland, and Nigeria.  While the adherents call their group the Temple of Isis, for them Isis incorporates all the manifestations of the Goddess around the world.  In the words of one adherent:  "We support the resurgence of the Goddess and the realization of a sustainable and peaceful future." (Laura wrote Tecia!)

Several years ago Barbara McGraw attended a Temple of Isis celebration on the beach outside of Los Angeles at dawn.  There gathered men and women dressed in colorful robes and bedecked with flowers to celebrate the "Sisters of the Sea."  The ceremony began with the blowing of a conch shell horn to call the participants to the ceremony.  All formed a circle, sand at their feed and the sea breeze blowing in their hair as the sun rose, casting streams of brightly colored light across the peaceful ocean.  Then the priestesses called to the four directions of the world and ask that the Goddesses corresponding to the directions joining the circle for the ceremony.

A slow deep drumming commenced, and one of the priestesses led the circle into a procession, dancing rhythmically to the music of chimes and bells that had joined the beating drum.  The group gathered in turn at each of the four altars for the four "sisters of the sea" - Isis (Egypt), Aphrodite (Greece), Mari (or Mary in her many aspects around the world), and Yemaya (Yoruba) - and received blessings from the priestesses there.  In succession the participants tasted the sweetness of chocolate at the altar for Aphrodite, received a blessing of scented oil placed on the forehead at the altar of Mari, at the altar of Yemaya received a blessing of cool waters sprinkled over their heads and were give copper pennies, which were then cast into the ocean by each person as an offering to the Goddess.

The ritual culminated at the altar of Isis, where the participants gathered around a small boat that had been made by the priestesses out of willow branches and leaves.  Each person placed flower petals, shells, herbs, or feathers into the boat as he or she made a prayer wish.  The boat was then launched into the sea to send the wishes to Goddess.

Grant us, thy children, Love and Joy, Wisdom and Abundance.

It was announced this week that Laura Janesdaughter, a Priestess of Isis in the Fellowship of Isis, Temple of Isis Los Angeles, and Long Beach WomanSpirit, died on May 27th due to complications related to cancer. In addition to her role as a Priestess within the Fellowship of Isis, Janesdaughter was a Flame Keeper of Brighid through Ord Brighideach, a Brighidine order engaging in devotional work to Brighid, and facilitated the Nephthys Work: Say My Name That I May Live in 2001 after 9/11. She is widely credited with bringing Isis worship to Los Angeles.

"We have lost one of our great Priestesses, The Rt. Rev. Laura Janesdaughter. She had the gift of total integrity. She brought the goddess into her life and her work, and the lives of others. She brought Isis to Los Angeles. The rituals she led on the beach with Isis Pelagia were well known as were the meetings she led for the community. Laura Janesdaughter was no snob, she could mix with everybody. She stood up to injustice whenever she saw it with moral courage. She was a great friend. The Priestesses she taught are brilliant, and they could rely on her for truth and moral courage." - Olivia Robertson, co-founder, Fellowship of Isis

Laura Janesdaughter was also a poet and editor, producing the "Isis Papers," an official publication of the Fellowship of Isis. When asked what one of her roles in the community was, she responded, "it is to support women," and Janesdaughter spent much of her time building infrastructure within the Fellowship of Isis and the broader Pagan community to realize her appointed mission; Co-founding the Star of Elen, the Circle of Pelagia, and creating resources like the Knot of Isis site.
