MESSAGE FROM CECE
We are just two weeks away from breaking ground at the Center's new facility. It will be the location of Resource Center's programs for youth, seniors, women, the transgender community, advocacy and mental health counseling, as well as serving as the new community center that many other organizations call home. We are grateful to the many individuals, groups, foundations and volunteers who helped bring this vision to life. Even while we work to raise the last 1/3 of the campaign, we will take time to celebrate the success to date. I hope you can join us April 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the northwest corner of Cedar Springs and Inwood.
Best regards, Cece
HEALTH: UBE'S P.J. MOTON CHOSEN AN "EMERGING LEADER TO WATCH"
P.J. Moton, team leader for the Center's United Black Ellumment (UBE) program, was in Washington, DC March 25 where he was honored by the National Black Justice Coalition as one of "100 Black LGBTQ/SGL Emerging Leaders to Watch." Moton took part in a briefing and lunch at the White House, where the White House Office of Public Engagement addressed public policy issues directly impacting the Black LGBTQ/SGL community. He also attended an afternoon briefing from social justice organizations and a reception. UBE, located in the Deep Ellum neighborhood east of downtown Dallas, provides culturally competent HIV/STD information and community fellowship to gay, bisexual and same-gender loving young men ages 21-28. The program enjoys broad community support in carrying out its mission.
COMMUNITY: CENTERLINK BOARD MEETS AT CENTER On March 26 and 27, the board of CenterLink, a national organization committed to strong, sustainable LGBT community centers, gathered at Resource Center. CEO Cece Cox is a co-chair of the CenterLink board of directors and played host to the leaders. In addition to learning about board leadership and best practices for nonprofits, the leaders got an up-close look at Center facilities, programs and services.
ADVOCACY:
FAMILY LEAVE CHANGES AT DALLAS COUNTY
On March 24, the Dallas County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a change to the county's family leave policy that was suggested by Center officials. The change would allow county workers to select a "designated caregiver" for which they would be able to use vacation or unpaid leave to care for that person. The definition of "caregiver" was broad enough to include grandparents caring for grandchildren as well as LGBT couples. The policy is similar to one adopted by the city of Dallas in spring 2014. Center officials approached the county in summer 2014 about creating this policy and worked with county officials to develop the proposal. The Center's advocacy work would not be possible without the generous support of donors who believe in the transformational change we promote and support.
