MESSAGE FROM CECE
As a supporter of Resource Center, you are part of something much bigger than any of us. Thanks to you, the Center is meeting needs across the continuum of life - from youth to seniors - addressing the health and social needs of our community. You also help us extend well beyond our community through educational initiatives. Stay tuned in this exciting year of 2015, as we continue to build community with the construction of our new facility. It's going to be a great year!
Regards, Cece
HEALTH: UBE RED TIE AFFAIR
On December 3, the Center's United Black Ellument (UBE) hosted their 2nd Annual Red Tie Affair and B.L.A.C.K. (Building Leaders And Cultivating Knowledge) Awards ceremony. Attendees commemorated World AIDS Day by recognizing community members fighting HIV/AIDS and people who have died during the struggle, highlighting the strong community ties and successful partnerships UBE has developed as a Center program. There was also special recognition of the second group of graduates of UBE's Gentlemen's Leadership Academy, a free, six-series workshop on professional development.
COMMUNITY:
YOUTH FIRST MAKES AIDS QUILT PANEL
On December 1, representatives from the Center's Youth First program attended a World AIDS Day ceremony in Plano where several new quilt squares for the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt were dedicated - including one made by the youth. Participants spent the month of November creating a panel in honor of Kandi, a local transgender performer who battled HIV/AIDS in the 1980s. The youth learned about Kandi's life from fellow performer Patti le Play Safe, then designed and sewed the panel together with the assistance of Youth First volunteer Cristina Hayes. The panel will be added to the over 94,000 panels in the AIDS quilt, the largest public art project in the world.
ADVOCACY: DALLAS COUNTY EXPLORES BROADER FAMILY LEAVE
After over six months of behind-the-scenes discussions, on December 16 Dallas County took the first step towards making its family leave policy more inclusive - a move prompted by conversations with the Center. The county's plan would allow employees to designate one non-relative as a "designated care recipient." If that person gets sick, the employee could then take unpaid time off to care for that person. The plan is similar to one adopted by the Dallas City Council last spring. After the city modified its plan, Center officials urged the county to take a similar step and discussed the plan with county officials. The proposal is expected to come up before commissioners for a final vote later this month or early February.
