 MESSAGE FROM CECE

Recently, participants in the Center's youth program engaged in the national conversation, "My 2024," to imagine our movement in ten years. The future happens whether we plan or not, but setting a vision for what we want to accomplish is a powerful way to get there. Our shared vision includes serving more LGBT youth, families, seniors, individuals in need of mental health services and all persons affected by HIV. Your support, and the support from others like you, have made possible a vision that will rise from the ground near Cedar Springs and Inwood. Construction will begin on the Center's new facility in 2015. I am grateful for those who have supported this dream that is becoming reality. If you would like to invest in this expression of hope and inspiration, please contact me at [email protected].

Regards, Cece

HEALTH: COMMUNITY IMPACT DAYS IN NUTRITION PROGRAMS

This month, two North Texas companies chose Resource Center to be the beneficiary of their United Way Day of Impact. Employees from Plano-based Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and Dallas-based Texas Instruments volunteered in the Center's food pantry and hot meals programs on October 27 and 29 respectively. The Day of Impact programs connect companies to United Way beneficiaries through a variety of volunteer service projects. The Center is grateful for the companies' participation as well as the United Way-both allow the Center to provide the life-affirming programs to the LGBT community and all people affected by HIV.

COMMUNITY: YOUTH FIRST PARTICIPATES IN "MY 2024"
On October 7, the Center's Youth First program took part in "My 2024," an online event to imagine the lives of LGBTQ people in ten years. Youth from across the country shared their hopes, concerns and predictions on what their futures could be like: what issues could be solved and what issues remain to be completed.  At the end of the project, nearly 3,000 futures were submitted as part of the My 2024 Declaration, which is intended to be a call to action for the next decade to help steer change on behalf of LGBTQ people.

ADVOCACY: TALKING "PREP" IN DALLAS MORNING NEWS' LGBTQ BLOG

The Center's Rafael McDonnell wrote on October 22 about one of the most-discussed new strategies to fight the spread of HIV/. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily pill that combined with regular condom use nearly eliminates the chance someone will contract HIV. McDonnell interviewed a serodiscordant couple-where one partner is HIV-positive and the other is negative-and learned why they decided PrEP was right for them. He also explored some of the issues surrounding PrEP, from physicians not knowing what it is, to concerns about cost as well as treatment adherence.
