Resource Center Resources
September 2014

 MESSAGE FROM CECE

This time of year reminds me that the Center has one foot in the present and one in the future. We close our fiscal year September 30. For months, we've been budgeting and planning for the next year, which begins October 1. Additionally, we are operating and growing programs in our current facilities, while also planning to break ground on a new building early in 2015.

Our past, current and future success is possible only through your generosity and that of earlier supporters who laid a strong foundation for Resource Center. The needs of the communities we serve have grown, and the Center must continue to meet them.

Thank you for making an impact for LGBT individuals and persons affected with HIV, through your investment in Resource Center.

Support us on Thursday, Sept. 18 during North Texas Giving Day and again on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5 Factor.

Regards, Cece

HEALTH: Dental Program Focuses On Preventative Care

Thanks to equipment upgrades, grants from foundations and consistent donor support from organizations like the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, the Center's dental program has grown, expanded and changed its focus. Dr. Lashaun Shaw, the dental program manager, says "We are focusing on the importance of preventative care. It used to be that we were known as the HIV dental clinic; now we're known as the place to receive dental care if you happen to be HIV-positive." Part of that change is removing barriers to care including emphasis on appointments for regular routine procedures such as cleanings, and having members of the medical case management staff based at Nelson-Tebedo Clinic to meet with clients. Dentist Jamie Linares added, "Our patients are grateful for the work we do, and we are grateful for our patients. It's so rewarding to work here."

COMMUNITY:
Gear Scholarships

The Center's GEAR (Gender Education, Advocacy and Resources) program for the transgender community is making an enormous difference through a series of innovative partnerships allowing people to have a smoother transition experience. Seven trans people have received scholarships for a year's worth of hormone replacement therapy and four counseling sessions courtesy of American Specialty Pharmacy. Five people have had their name and gender markers legally changed due to a partnership with attorney Katie Sprinkle. Other transitional scholarships have provided clothing and electrolysis services. This unique program allows the Center to provide life-changing services to the trans community who might not have had access to these programs.

ADVOCACY:  Uplift Education Adopts Inclusive Anti-Bullying Policy

When school started at the 14 campuses of Uplift Education's charter schools across North Texas in early August, the over 12,000 students were greeted with a new anti-bullying policy that includes protections against acts "motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic such as...sexual orientation, gender identity and expression." That policy was developed with the input of Resource Center and Fairness Fort Worth. Officials from both groups met with senior leadership of Uplift in the spring of 2012, proactively suggesting that the schools adopt a policy that would specifically protect LGBTQ and other students. Uplift developed a draft policy last fall, and turned to the Center and Fairness Fort Worth for additional input and review. The new policy was adopted by the Uplift board this spring and went into effect as of the beginning of the school year. This project with Fairness Fort Worth shows the importance of Center partnerships with other LGBT organizations to make life better for our community, from youth to seniors.
