MESSAGE FROM CECE
As a young adult trying to establish my life in Dallas, it didn't take too long before I found my way to what is now called Resource Center. For decades, one of our facilities, the John Thomas LGBT Community Center, has served as a hub for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. It's a joy, years later, to be involved in an organization that provides opportunities for today's youth and young adults and supports inclusion in our community. That inclusion can be seen in many forms, across many programs and events - youth, senior, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, ally, black, white and all tones in between. We are grateful for the support of donors and volunteers for making possible the programs and collaborations that support the needs of our diverse community. Thank you!
Regards, Cece
UBE COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR
The Center's United Black Ellument hosted its first-ever Gay Men of Color Health Fair April 26 connecting health providers to people of color. Vendors represented four elements of health; mental, physical, spiritual and financial. The free event was held in the Resource Center main parking lot. Free HIV/STD testing and other health screenings such as body mass index and blood sugar levels were provided to attendees. The health fair is an example of the innovative programs and services U-BE provides for Dallas' young Black gay and bisexual communities.
"BREAKING THE SILENCE" AT YOUTH FIRST
On April 11, the Center's Youth First program marked the annual national Day of Silence with a "Breaking the Silence" party to empower LGBTQ youth. The day before, youth watched the movie "Bullied" and wrote messages of encouragement to their peers. At the "Breaking the Silence" party, the youth opened the messages as part of the weekly Friday Family Dinner at Youth First and shared their reasons for ending the silencing of LGBTQ young people. Day of Silence, founded in 1996, is a day of action in which students across the country vow to take a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBTQ bullying and harassment in schools.
CENTER DELIVERS PRESENTATION AT BLACK TRANSMEN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Communications and advocacy manager Rafael McDonnell was among the presenters April 30 at the third annual Black Transmen Inc. (BTMI) transgender advocacy conference in Dallas. McDonnell's presentation, "Inclusive Public Workplace Policies-the 'North Texas" Model and How to Bring It to Your Community," explored public policy advocacy and strategies for inclusive workplaces. Center officials and BTMI have worked together on a number of projects in recent years, including Transgender Day of Remembrance commemorations and public advocacy at Dallas Area Rapid Transit for plus-one healthcare benefits.
MEMBERSHIP "I'm proud to be a Capital Campaign donor, and understand how vital it is to continue to support the Center's annual fund. It feels good to know that my monthly gift along with others is providing a steady funding stream to maintain the Center's programs and services. I'm proud to call myself a member!" Dana Barber
In early 2002, a small group of community members learned that the Center faced cutting programs and services to sustain the agency. They created a monthly giving/membership program called the 365 Club.
As a 365 Club member, your monthly contribution provides predicable and reliable income to help sustain Center programs such as our nutrition programs, HIV/STI testing, dental clinic, counseling, Youth First and Gray Pride programs.
