Message from Cece
The reach of Resource Center's work extends far beyond our facilities. This newsletter highlights some of the relationships and collaborations we have built with other organizations. They strengthen our collective impact, and help us reach more individuals with our programs and services. Our staff is often sought to share knowledge, experience and best practices. For example, Center staff were selected to participate recently at the national Creating Change conference. Additionally, funders are recognizing the impact of our work. In a new report published by Funders for LGBTQ Issues, Resource Center was the third-highest recipient of foundation funding to LGBTQ recipients based in the South during 2011-2012. We work hard to earn the support of donors and collaborators, by providing quality programs that improve lives in our community. Your investment in the Center makes this possible. Thank you.
p.s. Please join me Feb. 22 at Toast To Life - Circa 1983, to celebrate our 30 years of service!
Regards, Cece
U-BE at MLK Day Parade More than a dozen members of the Center's United Black Ellument (U-BE) program for young African-American gay and bisexual men, as well as coordinators PJ Moton and Jalenzski Brown, took part in the annual Elite News-Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade January 18. Members of the African-American LGBT fraternity Delta Phi Epsilon joined U-BE to walk in the parade, which ran from Dallas City Hall to Fair Park. Participants also had a pickup truck decked out in rainbow colors, and passed out information packets with condoms and lube to adults along the parade route.
Gray Pride on the move As part of its commitment to provide programs and services for LGBT seniors, Resource Center has established a collaborative relationship with Cathedral of Hope to benefit Gray Pride - the Center's program for the aging LGBT population in Dallas. As support and wellness groups and activities for LGBT seniors are established, this means more space to regularly meet. Plans are in the works to set up a regular drop-in space as well. Gray Pride will continue to operate as a program of Resource Center. Cathedral of Hope will, from time to time, participate in joint Gray Pride programming. Shelley Hamilton will continue as the program coordinator. Unless otherwise noted, all Gray Pride events will now take place at the Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road, Dallas.
Resource Center at Creating Change Resource Center staff - and roughly 4,000 of their fellow activists and advocates - were in Houston January 30-February 2 for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's annual Creating Change conference. Center CEO Cece Cox took part in meetings of CenterLink: the association of LGBT community centers, where she serves as a board member. Nelson-Tebedo Clinic coordinator JP Cano received a scholarship to attend the conference and participated in the "La Unión Hace La Fuerza Latino" Institute. Communications and advocacy manager Rafael McDonnell delivered a presentation on LGBT-inclusive public workplace policies. The staff of the Center's United Black Ellument (Sammy Wonzer-Nesbit, PJ Moton and Jalenzski Brown) took part in presentations on the African-American community and HIV.
