 Message from Cece

Partnerships are vital to the work we do at Resource Center. As you will see in this month's news, community partners help us reach people who need services such as HIV testing, nutritious food or mentoring and fellowship for youth. It is not an exaggeration to say that we could not do the work we do without the support of our partners. On behalf of Resource Center clients, staff and board of directors, thank you to everyone who has taken time to gather food for the pantry, serve a meal at Youth First, connect us to events where our presence is needed and the hundreds of other ways you support our mission. We are grateful for you.

Regards, Cece

Testing at Feast of Sharing
On November 14, the Center's Prevention Programs tested nearly two dozen people for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases at Central Market's Feast of Sharing at Fair Park. The Center was invited to take part in the event as a United Way Service Provider. More than 15,000 people in Dallas County are living with HIV, and many of them don't know it. The Center's prevention teams partner with a variety of organizations and events across the county to help people learn their HIV status and get them into medical care. Central Market's parent company, H-E-B, started Feast of Sharing 25 years ago in South Texas and has since expanded it to other parts of the state. Thousands of attendees were served a complete Thanksgiving dinner by a volunteer wait staff and had access to a variety of family and social services.

Family Dinner at Youth First
Every Friday evening at the Center's Youth First program, it's Family Dinner Night. Dinner Night features a variety of community groups and corporations bringing in a home-style dinner for several dozen LGBTQ youth and their parents. It's an opportunity for the youth to network and connect in a nurturing and supportive environment. Sometimes tacos, sloppy Joes or pizza are on the menu, but one recent dinner had a seasonal focus. On November 22, the United Court of the Lone Star Empire brought hams and turkeys for a Thanksgiving feast. Congregation Beth El Binah, Cathedral of Hope, First Unitarian Church of Dallas and Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church brought side dishes. The youth even got to take plenty of leftovers home.

Nutrition program needs
The holiday season is the busiest time of year for the Center's food pantry and hot meals programs, providing critical nutrition to people living with HIV/AIDS. Government funding only covers a portion of the programs. Fortunately, this is also the time of year when the community's boundless generosity is at its greatest, with donations of food and money to the program. On October 28, FedEx Office brought 65 bags of food to the Center's pantry. Home Sweet Home brought turkeys and desserts for the Center's annual Thanksgiving luncheon November 27. Rescue Yoga, EDEN Lounge, RTI Donor Services and Texas Instruments/TI PRIDE also held food drives. TI and AT&T volunteered in the hot meals program during November, and the Lost Souls Rugby Club were among the volunteer groups helping out preparing and serving the Thanksgiving luncheon. On behalf of the Center's clients, thank you for your continued support.
