Trout Valley Fen Restoration
The Fen is all set for St. Patrick's Day
The photo above shows the bright green watercress that grows naturally in the stream that runs through the Fen. Trout Valley volunteers have been busy this week sprucing up the Fen and marking walking trails throughout. Bernie (Trout Valley maintenance) will be delivery a load of wood chips for volunteers to spread on the walking trails in the Fen. Residents are welcome to lend a hand. In the meantime there will be another scheduled work session the Sunday, March 13, 2 p.m., to finish establishing the walking trails and complete general clean up in the Fen. Bernie will also be fixing the displaced bridge in the Fen in the coming weeks.
If you are interested in learning more about the Fen restoration project The Land Conservancy of McHenry County is holding the following workshops that will provide insight for you.
April 2 - Site assessment. Learn about the soils, trees, topography and potential that Trout Valley holds
April 16 - Learn to identify some of the most common and non-native species in Trout Valley
May 14 - Explore a site similar to the Trout Valley Fen and hear the ecologist's story regarding the restoration project
May 22 - Practice the skills of restoration with safety education, cutting, proper herbicide practices, and brush maintenance
Call The Land Conservancy 815-337-9502 to reserve a place in one or all of these workshops. $30 to attend all four workshops or $10 each.

2016 Trout Valley Scholarship!
The 2016 application is now available on the
The Village is pleased to offer one college scholarship in the amount of $750.
The applicant must:
1. Live in or be the son or daughter of someone who lives in the Village of Trout Valley or is a Trout Valley Association member.
2. Be a graduating high school senior, who is accepted and planning to attend a two or four year college or university full-time (a minimum of 12 credit hours)
Successful applicants will be chosen by an impartial selection committee comprised of leaders and members of the greater McHenry County community.
All applications must be postmarked no later than Saturday, April 30, 2016

Join us at the lodge on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, from 9 AM - 10:30-ish. Bring along any portable project and a cup of coffee or water. See you then!

Spring Program Registration at Cary Library
The Cary Library's spring edition of its quarterly newsletter, Books and Bytes, will be in the mail to all Library District residents in mid-February. It contains program info for March, April and May.
Registration for all programs begins on Friday, February 19.
Cary-Grove Football Association 2016 Football Golf Outing
The Cary-Grove Football Association is excited to announce the date of their annual Golf Outing. This year's event will take place on Friday, June 17 at Chalet Hills, 943 Rawson Bridge Rd., Cary. Register is now open and sponsorship opportunities are also available.
Teen Battle of the Bands Competition
The competition will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, April 30 at the Lions Park Rotary Band Shell. Spots are limited. Interested bands must submit a completed entry form to the Cary Park District Community Center. Entry forms for the competition are available online. Completed forms should be returned to the Community Center, 255 Briargate Rd., Cary.
Cary Park District to Host Summer Job Fair
On March 3 the Cary Park District will host a summer job fair for adults and teens seeking summer seasonal positions with the Park District. The job fair will be held at the Community Center, 255 Briargate Road, Cary from 5:30 - 7:00 pm.

In Need Some Maintenance Work?
Several people have recently asked me about the possibility of hiring our maintenance folk (Bernie and Tony) to do some maintenance work at their private homes. NO PROBLEM! How do you do it? Just contact them directly using Bernie's cell phone (224-401-3128) to set it up.
Here are the rules governing that hire:
1. They are acting as private, independent contractors and will set the price of the project between you and them. It would be best to have the terms in writing so there's no confusion later. You can either pay by the hour or by the project - however you agree to work it out with them. You are to pay them directly.
2. Since they are acting as private independent contractors, they cannot use Trout Valley tools or equipment - they will have to supply their own, or use yours.
3. They will not be working on Trout Valley time so will not be covered by our Workman's comp insurance.

Call the Sheriff
If you are aware of a problem in the community, it's often best to call the McHenry County Sheriff to ensure they have a record of the problem. If your home is burglarized, you witness vandalism, you see people loitering down by the river or at other locations within the Valley, please inform the Sheriff. Maintaining a connection with the Sheriff's office helps to ensure the security of our community. The Sheriff's non-emergency number is (815) 338-2144.

Welcome Lady!
There's a new Welcome Lady in town!! Terry Parrilli has graciously offered to bring back our old tradition of visiting the homes of new neighbors to bring them neighborhood greetings and information. She will be able to answer your questions about our village and association, the many wonderful amenities, and the clubs and activities that are available, etc.
She has already started contacting some of our new neighbors, but if you moved in recently and would like a visit - please feel free to contact Terry.

Blast versus Newsletter?
We've recently had questions and requests for sending out email blasts to Trout Valley residents. These have included blasts for charitable donations and open houses. Most community information can be circulated in the weekly newsletter. The blasts are reserved for important and time-sensitive information. We want residents to know that when they receive a blast, they should read it as soon as they can, as it is something of concern for the community.
When we reject a blast request, we are trying to balance the need to communicate effectively and quickly with Trout Valley against the rights of the residents not to be overwhelmed with local messages. If we don't send out a lot of blasts, we hope those we do send get your attention. We appreciate your consideration.
