Questers News

On April 1st, the Leona Farms Questers group had the great fortune of being given a guided tour of the historic Arlington Race Track in Arlington Heights, IL.  Our tour guide was none other than Trout Valley resident Alyssa (Ali) Murphy (who handles marketing for the track) along with her associate, Steve Tortorella.  Alyssa and her husband Mike currently keep two retired race horses at our Trout Valley stables.  A big thank you to Alyssa and Steve!

John Hertz, early owner of the Trout Valley land that we now enjoy, was once a part-owner of Arlington track.  Here is a little history that I pulled up from the website, Waymark....

John D. Hertz

1879 - 1961

Yellow was the color and name of his taxicab company, and yellow and black were his stable colors. Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hertz' most famous Thoroughbred was Count Fleet, which won the triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes) in 1943. Count Fleet was a son of Reigh Count, which had won the Kentucky Derby for the Hertz stable in 1928, and he sired a later derby winner in Count Turf (1951). Hertz embodied the American success story. An immigrant from Austria, he left home and first found work driving a newspaper delivery wagon in Chicago. He later scuffled through his youth as a newspaperman, boxer, fight manager, and bookmaker's assistant. After marriage to Fannie Kesner, he sought more stability. Hertz established the Yellow Cab company and at one point was building a majority of the cabs used in the United States. He later launched the Hertz Rental Car system. During the 1920s, Hertz' interest in racing led him to organize respectable businessmen in Chicago to purchase the financially troubled Arlington Park, blocking the plans of Al Capone's mob to take over the track. The Hertzes originally had a breeding farm in Illinois, but then established Stone creek Stud near Paris, Ky. (www.waymarketing.com)

Riding Club Flower Sale

Trout Valley is such an amazing place to live and spring is finally here! This year, the youth of our non-profit Trout Valley Riding Club are holding a fundraiser Plant Sale to raise funds for necessary repairs and improvements to the barn. The plants will be delivered directly to us from the very high quality, well-known Bartel's Nursery in Michigan - they are terrific plants at a great value. "Pick Up" is the day before Mother's Day - Saturday, May 10 - at the barn, so plan on stopping by to meet our friendly riders and beautiful horses!

Please consider hanging baskets as gifts and purchasing  your landscape flowers in support of our young riders this year and spread the word for us to your friends. IF YOU LIVE IN TROUT VALLEY, WE CAN EVEN DELIVER YOUR ORDER DIRECTLY TO YOUR HOUSE! No need to get your vehicle dirty this year with landscaping purchases! This weekend every home will get an order form delivered to their door, and a pdf is also attached to this newsletter. If you are looking for something in particular not on the order form, just ask - Bartel's may be able to provide what you are looking for. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Order forms & payment can be dropped off at 165 Hawthorne, or given to any barn member.

Send blast submissions
to Bob Baker at
 Blast versus Newsletter?

We've recently had questions and requests for sending out email blasts to Trout Valley residents.  These have included blasts for charitable donations and open houses.  Most community information can be circulated in the weekly newsletter.  The blasts are reserved for important and time-sensitive information.  We want residents to know that when they receive a blast, they should read it as soon as they can, as it is something of concern for the community.

When we reject a blast request, we are trying to balance the need to communicate effectively and quickly with Trout Valley against the rights of the residents not to be overwhelmed with local messages.  If we don't send out a lot of blasts, we hope those we do send get your attention. We appreciate your consideration.

Thanks, Bob Baker
