Meet a Few of our New
"Neighbors" at the Barn!
Invisible Star - Invisible Star is 7 years old and retired from racing in March of 2013. Now known as "Star" he loves being in the new world of relaxation, off of the track. In his career as a racehorse, he won 7 races and his total earnings were over $96,000. His favorite treat? Peppermints! He is now in training to become a show jumper.
Holy King - Now known as just "D" (short for his nickname "Racing Devil") he is 17 years old. My family bred this horse, so I was there when he was born! He has never been away from our family. He retired from racing early but went straight into the show world. While he never got to the Winner's Circle at the track - he has many blue ribbons from showing in dressage. He has a stubborn personality, but D and I have an amazing bond over the past 17 years and he is a professional whenever I get in the saddle. I used to visit him at the track when I was little. On the track he was known as a very intense horse, but when I came to visit I could just walk in his stall and hug him - even at 9 years old. His favorite treat is also peppermints!
Turk or Treat - Now nicknamed "Turk" or "Turkey". He is 18 years old. He won 5 races and earned over $154,000 in his career. He is like a big teddy bear - very sweet. He is completely different than his previous racing personality - now he is very slow paced and calm. The only thing that gets him running is food!
All three of our horses raced primarily at Arlington International Racecourse where I work as the Marketing Manager and Television Reporter & Analyst. My dad is a racehorse trainer at Arlington, so Invisible Star and Holy King were his horses when they were racing. We wanted to keep them in the family when they retired!

A Little History
While we've all seen those brown and black equines munching away in pastures throughout the Valley, many are unaware of the role they and their owners have played in our community over the years. Certainly stories about Kentucky Derby winners being buried here abound. And who hasn't looked at certain homes and imagined them as show pony barns or stallion enclosures.
But did you know about the Trout Valley Horse Show that played such a significant role in our community? The real estate developers for the Valley deeded the property around today's Trout Valley Lodge to the TV Association, if the Riding Club would maintain the prestigious Horse Show.
And maintain it they did. Ask Barb or Dan Palenske to show the clippings they have saved over the years - quite a collection. Subsequent competitions resulted in Silver Cups with Valley children winning Gymkama and All Round titles; resident daughters like Katie Delany being crowned Fox Valley Pony Club champions; and a host of similar accomplishments.
For the first time in many years, the Riding Club has a full barn. These dozen plus equines represent today's cherished cavalry. They include three ex-racehorses, a polo-pony from South America, a Quarter Horse Reining competitor, one colorful Boy Scout mount, and others. In coming weeks we'll continue to profile some of these "Hoofed Wonders" for you. Hopefully you'll both enjoy the stories and become as proud of our equestrian heritage as the Trout Valley Riding Club members have become.

Cary Fire Plans Centennial Celebration Dance
September 14
In 2013, the Cary Fire Protection District (CFPD) is celebrating 100 Years of Service to the community. For years, CFPD held an annual dance as a fundraiser for the firefighters association. The tradition stopped in the 1980's as other fundraising activities were pursued.
As part of this year's centennial celebration, CFPD will once again host a BALLROOM DANCE. Music will be performed by a live band. Hors D'oeuvres will be available as well as a cash bar.
The dance will be:
LOCATION: Holiday Inn Crystal Lake
COST: $20 per ticket
Tickets for the dance may be purchased at CFPD Fire Station #1, 400 Cary-Algonquin Road, everyday between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm. Tickets can also be obtained through any CFPD Firefighter.
Please come out and help us celebrate the CFPD Centennial. Special Centennial T-Shirts are also available for purchase. For more information, please contact CFPD at (847) 639-2121 or visit www.caryfire.com.
