Fen and Nature Walk Clean Up

Clean the Fen Days will be held Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th  from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Please volunteer your time to benefit one of our most precious natural assets.

We will be removing the remaining buck thorns on the ridge area, dead trees, downed branches and light trail maintenance.

Please bring tools and wear protective clothing.

We will need sand and sand bags.

It would be helpful to have two or three people who will "take charge" of select activities on the work day.

If you have questions or you would like to volunteer to lead an activity on one of the days, contact Doug at dougpeters@mail.com.

Thank you,

Doug Peters

              The Oak Tree

Oak Trees can reach up to 100 feet in height.  Their deep roots often keep them from toppling in strong winds.  Hence the expression "The Mighty Oak".  Mighty Oaks, from little acorns grow.  There are two main groups of Oaks.  White Oaks have rounded leaves.  Red Oaks have pointed leaves.  Acorns from the Red Oak are bitter tasting.  Most animals prefer the sweeter acorn from the White Oak leaving the less popular Red Oaks to grow into new forests.  Red Oaks are greater in number for this reason.  The White Oak is the Illinois State tree.  With time and luck, a tree may become a legacy for future generations.  Trees are good for the environment.  They prevent soil erosion.

With hard close-grained wood, the Oak became one of North America's most important trees.

Tree planting

We are naming this tree the Inspiration Tree" - (Inspiring Life).  Dedicated to Inspiration. This is the beginning of a series of special named trees throughout our beautiful Valley.

Bear, deer, racoons and squirrels like to eat acorns.  Many birds also like the tasty nut inside the shell.  Native Americans made flour from acorns by soaking them in a stream, drying them in the sunshine, and pounding them into a powder.

White Oak Acorns ripen in one year.  It takes two years for the Red Oak Acorns to ripen.

There are other varieties of Oak trees, such as the Bur Oak, which is prevalent in Trout Valley.

Swimming Pool News

Back by popular demand........"Adopt - Pot" at the pool.  1 Large Planter, 3 small planters, & 12 Square pots are available.  Color scheme is Red, purples, oranges, & yellows.  Contact Heidi Peters  sunshinedaydream67@yahoo.com
to reserve your pot today.

'Adopt a pot' was established 5 years ago to save $$ for the pool budget.  People sign up to plant flowers (they purchase on their own) in the planters that are available at the pool.  Based on the color scheme indicated, any type of flower can be purchased and planted by the person who signs up for the pot(s).  We like all the pots to be planted before opening day.  Potting soil may also be needed for many of the pots, the square ones, for sure  We keep the gate unlock for their convenience to plant.  It's fun to see the different styles and flower selection.

Thanks again!

SPRING REMINDER FROM
THE BUILDING COMMITTEE

You need to submit plans for approval if you want to add on to your house (room additions, garages, decks, patios, porches, bumped-out bay windows, new roof elevations, etc.)  If you are changing an exterior material, or its color, e.g. paint, asphalt shingles, brick/stone, decking materials, you also need to get approval from the Trout Valley building Committee.  If it is simply a replacement with the same color or material, you do NOT have to obtain permission.  Permits required for interior projects, such as plumbing or electrical issues, can be obtained by your licensed contractor.

The procedure for submitting changes is as follows:

  1. Get the Building Committee checklist from the Trout Valley website,  www.troutvalleycommunity.com
  2. Submit plans with check list to Chairman, Steve Kidder 847-462-2564.  Per the checklist, include architectural drawings with proposed changes, all affected elevations, side lot lines, material finishes, $40 processing fee (non-refundable)  and $1,000 performance bond fee (refundable) to the Chairman for review .  It should take no more than 2 weeks.
  3. With a letter of approval from the Building Committee, you can obtain a building permit from McHenry County (815-334-4560), or the Village of Cary (847-639-0003), if you live within the Cary city limits.
  4. Upon satisfactory and timely completion of your project, notify the chairman, who will approve your $1,000 performance bond fee refund.

If you have any questions, please review the forms and building guidelines on the website, or call  Steve Kidder at 847-462-2564 or Ann Somers at 847-639-1278.
