 While we may not be experiencing fierce weather like in so many other parts of the country, we are in full roar! The Florida House is "marching" ahead with speed and strength on a number of project components. Stay tuned, as we will soon be releasing detailed updates on the following developments:

CONGRATULATIONS KIMAL LUMBER!
Congratulations to Kimal Lumber for unveiling their new store in Sarasota! Long time friends and supporters of the Florida House, President Al Bavry and LEED AP Tom Geriak, continue to manage one of the only independent lumber dealers in Southwest Florida. 
Also, did you know that Kimal Lumber has a green event center?! Located in Venice, the Kimal Event Center was built as a "living m odel" of sustainable building practices. Dually, it serves as a space for hosting effective team meetings. Having such a closely aligned mission is what makes Kimal Lumber and Florida House likely partners. Kimal supports our vision to have a green meeting house in Sarasota!

WHAT A GARDEN!
Thanks to a generous donation from the
Brenda Carter Memorial Fund,
Florida House now features an urban garden. Following permaculture practices, the garden displays a keyhole design feature allowing a higher land usage than typical box design. This photo was taken about a month ago in February of 2014 and the garden is now carpeted by a plethora of cover crops.
Come for a visit, stay for a while, pull some weeds!

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN?
Universal Design is hot topic in our nation and was recently discussed in Sarasota at the Department of Elder Affairs 2014 Housing Forum and Florida House Institute's Home on Earth Workshop, just to name two. Louis Tenenbaum is just one of the knowledgable people on this subject with whom we collaborate. Universal Design is tied to Aging in Place, another hot topic for us locally and beyond. Tenenbaum recently worked on an affordable, Universal Design project that achieved a LEED Platinum rating. We happen to like the definition of Universal Design used in connection with this project.

VOLUNTEER DAY THIS SATURDAY!

According to Dale Lewis, our Project Manager, this Saturday will be about, "Demolition, drywall, storm shutters, walls, etc. Bring gloves, hammers, sledge hammers, and crow bars.
Lots of fun!"
