The new, green boat registration decals are now required--the old ones expired April 30. If you haven't already "gone green" we encourage you to apply those new decals, good through April 30, 2019.
"Breaking News" for Des Moines area WT users: Online survey voting in the "Des Moines Dam Debate" ends Sunday, May 1, so visit the MPO website https://dmampo.org/water-trails/ ASAP!
The IWTA Website Events Calendar now includes over 140 entries for 2016--on-water & off-water events, extended trips, activities, meetings, conferences, holidays, observances, full moon & meteor shower dates, holidays, & observances. We look forward to adding more. Check it out at
Hazard and hypothermia awareness, proper training, a PFD, necessary gear, a paddle plan, and the buddy system are important for paddling at any time of the year. At this time of year we also need to be aware of turkey hunters. The Iowa DNR encourages outdoor users, including mushroom hunters, paddlers, anglers, hikers, and others heading into the woods during spring turkey season to "avoid wearing patriotic colors - red, white and blue - as these colors are shared by gobblers. Instead, wear blaze orange to be recognizable to hunters."

May 28-29; South Dakota Kayak Challenge on Missouri River

This challenging annual kayak race is not an "Iowa" event, but several Iowans currently hold records in a variety of race classes.
The South Dakota Kayak Challenge (SDKC) is a 72-mile marathon-endurance paddling race on the Missouri River. Racers attend a safety briefing Friday night, and the race starts at 7 am on Saturday. Racers must reach the finish line before 1 pm on Sunday. Racers must check in at each of four checkpoints on the route. There are no cut-off times for the checkpoints; they are for supply, support and logistics.
Racers of the SDKC face 72 miles of wind and waves on the Missouri River between Yankton, S.D. and South Sioux City, Neb. "WILD PHOTO ADVENTURES" ON IPTV MOVES TO TUE/THU EVENINGS ON "LEARNS
"Wild Photo Adventures," with host Doug Gardner, has shared 5 seasons of treks to wild locations, beautiful examples of scenery, plant, and animal photography, along with explanations, tips, and hints to improve our own photography. The half-hour show has been broadcast on daytime IPTV (Learns Channel) for some time, but in May it moves to two segments each week, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 10:00 pm on Learns.
WILL IT FLOAT?
You may be looking forward to a season of paddling, or a weeklong wilderness paddling adventure, and thinking how much more relaxing it would be to record the fun and scenery with a small waterproof camera. There are a few from which to choose, they are convenient to access and use, and prices seem to be stable or moving in a favorable direction, so they are worth considering. A word of caution, however: Most small waterproof cameras do not float! It's no surprise that you can buy a "PFD" accessory for your small waterproof camera, often in bright orange. We recommend testing your camera/PFD combination in shallow water as a final bit of insurance to maintain that "peace-of-mind."

Project AWARE 2016 Registration Materials Now Available
|
Project AWARE organizers have announced that volunteers will have an opportunity this summer to spend their vacations cleaning up, learning about and exploring 53 miles of the Lower Des Moines River between Eldon and Farmington from July 11 to 15. The Des Moines Dam Debate: ONLINE VOTING ENDS SUNDAY, MAY 1, SO HURRY! What do you want to do on the river in downtown Des Moines? The Dam Debate began at Des Moines Register event on April 26, and the online survey continues through Sunday, May 1.
The MPO website indicates that "The public's ideas and opinions will help shape the Greater Des Moines Water Trails and Greenways Master Plan that the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is developing on behalf of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. When complete later this year, the plan will become the first regional roadmap for developing a network of recreational corridors along 150 miles of rivers and creeks in central Iowa."
The website also provides links to individual chapters of the group's State of the Rivers Report, "the culmination of months of research (which) represents the most comprehensive exploration to date of the current conditions of 150 miles of rivers and creeks throughout Greater Des Moines."

What Is It? ANSWER
|
Skunk Cabbage is rare in Iowa, but can be found in muddy, cold-water environments in the eastern part of the state. They have a unique beauty, and a unique life cycle, deserving of our respect and protection.
From the Iowa Plants Website: "Skunk cabbage is usually the first plant to flower in the spring. It often melts its way through patches of snow. It grows in muddy soils and is rare in Iowa. A distribution map (FNA) shows that just a small region of eastern Iowa is included on the western edge of the species distribution.
"The plant exhibits several unusual characteristics including; a crowded and compressed inflorescence on a structure called a spadix which is protected by a modified hood-like leaf called a spathe, a thermal regulating ability, contractile roots which pull the plant further into the ground each season, and a rarely appreciated (by humans) fetid odor.
From the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area (located in Minnesota) Website:
 |
|
"The skunk cabbage is among our earliest flowering plants, sometimes emerging through the frozen soil and snow and at a time of year when temperatures may still dip below freezing. The large maroon spathe forms a cup around the slender finger-like spadix, which is covered in small flowers. The leaves, which emerge after the flower puts on its appearance, are large, fleshy, and bright green.
"The species name, foetidus, shares its root with the word "fetid," which means "stinking." And if you don't mind getting down on your hands and knees in the skunk cabbage's soggy habitat to sniff this plant you'll discover it has what most would consider an unpleasant odor. Even its common name implies a scent less than desirable, although some suggest that the odor reminds them of garlic. The odor and color of the spathe fits into the skunk cabbage's reproductive strategy of attracting pollinating flies--that prefer rotting flesh or dung--which then carry pollen to the next plant.
"Skunk cabbages can maintain a temperature inside the spathe significantly warmer than the surrounding air temperature--as much as 15-35 degrees warmer--by consuming carbohydrates stored in their fleshy rhizomes. The warmth helps in attracting cold-blooded, early-emerging pollinating insects, in developing seeds, or both, during early spring when temperatures are often chilly.
"Skunk cabbages become senescent (the leaves and stems die back) by August making the plant difficult to find in late summer. They are persistent, however, so they will be found in the same area the following spring. Fascinating Facts: - Skunk cabbages do not produce seed until they are five to seven years old.
- Individual rhizomes, from which the leaves and flowers spring, can persist for decades, perhaps centuries.
- The spathe is shaped to produce a constant movement of air within itself, helping to maintain an even temperature.
- Honeybees may use the skunk cabbage as places to warm up on long flights between hive and nectar sources during cold weather."
From the Skunk River Water Trail website: "Native Americans called the river "Chichaqua", which meant Skunk, or "smelly place". Some believe the river was named for the odorous wild "Skunk Onions" (or Skunk Cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus) which once grew along its banks. Being the first green plant to appear in the spring, it was sought by both Native Americans and pioneers."
