| Remember this? Now is the time to get out and enjoy your Iowa Water Trails. |
It's June, with the most WT-related events of any month on our IWTA Calendar. Father's Day is officially June 21, but feel free to celebrate on whichever date or whichever WT event that fits your family schedule. Take Dad for a cool float--save working around the hot BBQ for next month.
The IWTA 2015 Calendar now includes over 140 events, celebrations, floats, races, tours, cleanups, presentations, shows, workshops, meetings, full moon dates, and holiday reminders. You can find those calendar items in the Newsletter, on the Website, and in the PDF.
All of these events deserve your consideration, participation, and support, but we hope that you will definitely consider attending the Iowa Trails Summit June 11-12. This Summit promotes the efforts of Iowans working to develop, manage, and market all forms of trails, and Water Trails are finding their place alongside trails for hikers, cyclists, snowmobilers, equestrians, off-roaders, and others. June 11 will include a full day of presentations and programs relating to Water Trails, and June 12 will include at least one panel discussion on Water Trails. It will be a great opportunity to learn, to network, and to support the Water Trails initiative.
We hope to see you at the Iowa Trails Summit in Cedar Falls June 11-12.
Please note that the "IWTA 2015 Planning Calendar" PDF listed in the "Quick Links" has again been updated with the most recent cancellations, date changes, and new event additions. Please contact us with your further additions or corrections.
Please be careful out there!
Remember to wear your PFD, paddle with others, know your capabilities, and file a float plan.

Jun 6; "The Meskwaki Along the South Skunk River" Presentation, Ames
|
Join archaeologist Chérie Haury-Artz of the University of Iowa, Office of the State Archaeologist to learn about the culture of the Meskwaki along the South Skunk River and elsewhere in Iowa.
Sponsored by the South Skunk River Water Trail, the presentation will be held from 2:00 pm-3:00 pm, on Saturday, June 6, at Carr Pool parking lot, North River Valley Park, Ames. This event is free, open to the public, and no registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets, or be prepared to stand for the presentation. If it rains, the event will be held at the PEO Room, Ames Public Library.
The Meskwaki and their Sauk allies settled in Iowa around 1650. Their primary settlements were along the Mississippi, Iowa, and other rivers in eastern Iowa but the territory that they utilized ranged across the state. In this presentation we will talk about archaeological and historic evidence for Meskwaki occupations along the South Skunk and learn about their lives and technology during the time between 1650 and 1842. You will have an opportunity to examine artifacts from the period and experiment with making your own plant-fiber cordage, grind corn, and try out traditional Native American toys and games.

Jun 9-10; IDNR Kayak School, Additional Canoe & Kayak Sessions Aug & Sep
|
 | Canoe School Participants Navigating Rapids on the Boone River. Photo by Todd Robertson |
From Todd Robertson, IDNR River Programs Outreach Coordinator:
"The Iowa DNR 2-day Canoe/Kayak School courses (including a one-day flat-water class) are a great way to improve skills for people who help get others out on the water. You are expected to have some previous experience, but not expertise. The intent is to increase safety, lower stress, have fun, and pay knowledge forward, based on American Canoe Association instructional foundations. Time is divided between some classroom and hands-on experience on a lake environment and then a river.
"Participants from past schools rated the training extremely helpful. They were also surprised by how much there was to learn and how intensive this course is. The one-day flat-water class will be held at Gray's Lake in Des Moines. All of the two-day classes will be held along the Boone River at Briggs Woods, in Hamilton County. By popular demand, we have added a second kayak school for this year. Class size is limited, and these classes will fill up fast."

Jun 13-14; Entries Due for Iowa State Fair Photography Contest -- Many Opportunities for WT-Related Subjects
|
Entries for the 2015 Iowa State Fair Photography Contest will be accepted Saturday, June 13 & Sunday, June 14 from 10 am until 4 pm in the Cultural Center on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines. Mailed entries must be postmarked by midnight on Saturday, June 6. All selected photos, including those winning awards in the many classes, will be on display during the annual Iowa State Fair, Aug 13-23. Find Fair info at http://www.iowastatefair.org/
The 2015 Theme Class is "Silhouettes," described as "an image of a person, animal, object, or scene that appears dark against a lighter background. The main subject appears as a solid shape, usually black, against the background. The interior of a silhouette is featureless and without detail. Because a silhouette emphasizes the outline of an object, only its shape and lines can give us a clue as to what the main subject may be. Silhouettes can often be used to convey feelings, emotions, mood, drama, and mystery of the subject." Our Water Trails should provide many opportunities to capture silhouettes of people, trees, wildlife, bridges, historic structures, etc. against backdrops of sunrises, sunsets, rivers, lakes, or other natural settings.
Our Water Trails could be your inspiration for creating winning photos in many of the other photo classes as well--consider entering Iowa Places & Landscapes; Things & Still Life; Plants, Flowers & Trees; Animals, Insects & Wildlife; People; Sports; Panoramic; and more.

What IWTA Newsletter Readers Are Reading & Recommending

To balance IWTA neutrality, reader participation, and the exchange of potentially useful information, while minimizing the impact on IWTA Newsletter space, following are brief comments and links to items that your fellow readers find interesting:

ISU creates "VFI's" to improve water quality in Lake LaVerne, Ames.
A team of Iowa State University faculty members and graduate students has created three vegetated floating islands (VFIs) that act as a treatment solution to enhance water quality in Lake LaVerne, on ISU's campus. The VFIs are intended to remove the pollutants, reduce the amount of algae, and create additional habitat. The islands also incorporate elements of public artwork. Faculty members on the project include Austin Stewart, assistant professor of art and visual culture, Mimi Wagner, associate professor of landscape architecture, and John Downing, professor of ecology, evolution and organismal biology. Another partner on the project is the Story Soil and Water Conservation District, which received a nearly $42,000 grant from the Iowa Watershed Improvement Review Board.
The islands function similarly to constructed wetlands, but are much less expensive and more effective. The three VFIs will be monitored into the fall, and final design guidelines will then be developed. It is hoped that the VFI model could benefit lakes and ponds across the state. The group is sharing resources on the website www.laverne-islands.com

Archaeologist Expresses Concerns re Bakken Pipeline Disturbance of Historical Sites.
State Archaeologist John Doershuk's concerns regarding performing appropriate assessments of potential sites of archaeological significance along the route of the proposed Bakken Pipeline were noted in a May 28 Cedar Rapids Gazette article. "The Corps of Engineers will require archaeological surveys of 16 of the 17 major river and stream crossings in Iowa, but that represents only a 'drop in the bucket of the whole project footprint,' he said." Wildlife Diversity Program publishes a very interesting quarterly newsletter.
While most Iowans are aware of deer, pheasants, walleye, ducks, catfish, turkeys, muskrats, crappies and other traditional game or sport fish species, many are much less aware of the vast majority of our Iowa wildlife species-those that are not hunted, trapped, or fished for-those often referred to as "nongame" wildlife. These include shorebirds, raptors, songbirds, many small mammals and bats, most amphibians, reptiles, many small fish, butterflies, dragonflies and more - a very wide diversity of wildlife, indeed. If you are interested in this great range of Iowa "nongame" wildlife, you would probably enjoy reading many of the short articles in the quarterly newsletter of the Iowa Wildlife Diversity Program. The spring 2015 issue includes items about peregrine falcon updates around Iowa, wood bison reintroduction to Alaska, birds avoiding tornados, Small Research and Education Grants awarded, Waterman Prairie Bird Conservation Area, Ghosts of the Cedar River Valley: Wood Turtle research in Iowa, northern long-eared bat listed under Endangered Species Act, spotlight on the blue jay, health cautions re bird feeders, and the prairie chicken story.

Grants will fund stream signs, help connect citizens with watersheds in Pottawattamie County.
John Klein shared a news release announcing that both the East and West Pottawattamie Soil & Water Conservation Districts had received grants from the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation which will fund half of their projects to place stream signs on paved county and state highways. Working with the Iowa DOT and the local County Engineer, the two Districts are making plans for a multi-phased project that will place green stream signs on local creeks and rivers.
Rivers are only as good as the streams and creeks that flow into them. Water quality management happens up at the top of the watershed. "We want local people to know and identify with the streams they live and farm near. By knowing the stream's name, the stream becomes an entity and not just a "ditch". People care more for watersheds that have an identity." said John Klein, a retired NRCS Biologist and former RC&D Coordinator.
| Blue Grass Creek sign on Hwy 71 in Audubon County. |
Phase one grant funding will pay for half of the costs of the materials (signs and posts) with the DOT and County Engineer staff providing the labor. The SWCD's along with the Pheasants Forever Chapter and local entities will provide the other half of the material costs. Local towns, organizations, and 4-H Clubs have signed up to be sponsors of signs on local bridges. The first phase will provide 42 signs for 21 stream crossings in the county. This will cover four major streams for the length of the county.
Labeling streams has been gaining in popularity across Iowa. The local rural people like it as it gives their rural neighborhoods a new landmark. It builds watershed concern and caring for water quality. Carroll, Guthrie, and Audubon counties have also added stream signs in recent years, and the IDALS watershed programs have begun adding road stream-signs into specific watershed areas around the state.

2015 Iowa Legislative Session Still In Progress -- Will Legislature Fill the Trust Fund?
|
|
2015 REAP & Environmental Lobby Day.
|
The Iowa Legislature has not adjourned, and is one month past its target for the end of the session. The primary focus is on the budget and funding for several areas, particularly those relating to education. Late on Friday, May 29, House and Senate negotiators announced that they had reached a tentative budget deal which would allow them to bring the session to a close this coming week. No details were released.
At this point, it is doubtful that those "details" will include action to fund the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund. SF504 (formerly SSB1272) would increase the state sales tax from 6% to 6.375% to fund the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund.
In November of 2010, nearly five years ago, an overwhelming majority of Iowa voters (63%) supported the creation of the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund, which would provide sustainable and substantial funding for conservation, and go toward unmet funding needs in existing programs. However, the trust, which would raise an estimated $150 million annually to better protect our water quality, agricultural soils and wildlife habitat, has never been filled.

Length: 35 ft. Comments: Very dangerous low water bridge 40 ft below dam. More info on this and other dams around Iowa can be found at: http://www.iowawhitewater.org/lhd/LHDnorthwood.html
Those interested in paddling the Shell Rock River are encouraged to consult the book "Paddling IOWA, 128 Outstanding Journeys by Canoe and Kayak." On page 124, author Nate Hoogeveen suggests that you, "Put in downstream right of the bridge and paddle down the swift and rocky stream meandering in a wooded corridor through town." Among the cautions he includes for the section from Northwood to Plymouth (14.7 miles) are the limestone bottom, common periods of low water, and "quite a number" of pasture fences across the river.
The "Way Revised" 2004 edition of the "Paddling Iowa" book is available at a variety of outlets, including Indian Creek Nature Center, local paddling shops, many bookstores, and online. Information on paddling the Shell Rock River was also included in the previous (96 Great Trips) edition of the book.

What Is It? Quiz ANSWER | The Archaeological Guide to Iowa, authored by William E. Whittaker, Lynn M. Alex, and Mary C. De La Garza, was published by University of Iowa Press in April, 2015. It includes 264 pages, 39 maps, 92 black & white images, and 51 color plates. Those of you with parallel interests in Iowa Water Trails and Iowa History should find this new guide book to be interesting reading and a useful reference. Following is a description of the book, provided by U of I Press. "Iowa has the reputation of being one big corn field, so you may be surprised to learn it boasts a rich crop of recorded archaeological sites as well-approximately 27,000 at last count. Some are spectacular, such as the one hundred mounds at Sny Magill in Effigy Mounds National Monument, while others consist of old abandoned farmsteads or small scatters of prehistoric flakes and heated rocks. Untold numbers are completely gone or badly disturbed-destroyed by plowing, erosion, or development. "Fortunately, there are many sites open to the public where the remnants of the past are visible, either in their original location or in nearby museum exhibits. Few things are more inspiring than walking among the Malchow Mounds, packed so tightly it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Strolling around downtown Des Moines is a lot more interesting when you are aware of the mounds, Indian villages, and the fort that once stood there. And, although you can't visit the Wanampito site, you can see the splendid seventeenth-century artifacts excavated from it at Heery Woods State Park. "For people who want to experience Iowa's archaeological heritage first hand, this one-of-a-kind guidebook shows the way to sixty-eight important sites. Many are open to visitors or can be seen from a public location; others, on private land or no longer visible on the landscape, live on through artifact displays. The guide also includes a few important sites that are not open to visitors because these places have unique stories to tell. Sites of every type, from every time period, and in every corner of the state are featured. Whether you have a few hours to indulge your curiosity or are planning a road trip across the state, this guide will take you to places where Iowa's deep history comes to life." You can save 25% on the purchase of this book by going to the U of I Press website, visiting The Archaeological Guide to Iowa book page, and using promo code WHIT15. This is case sensitive, so be sure to make those letters capitals! The coupon is transferable; please forward to family and friends, but the offer expires July 28, 2015 http://uiowapress.org/books/2015-spring/archaeological-guide-iowa.htm A May 28 article in the Cedar Rapids Gazette provides more information about the book's authors and their concern for our cultural history, along with some highlights of eastern Iowa archaeological sites: http://thegazette.com/subject/news/education/higher-education/buried-history-local-authors-work-to-protect-past-20150527 Image of book cover by University of Iowa Press Return to Top |
