Co-op Principal #7: Concern for Community (Part 2)
Cooperative Principal #7:
"While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of communities through policies and programs accepted by the members."
As a cooperative business, we work to support our members and our community, because we are stronger together.
TerraCycle Program: TerraCycle is a company that strives to "reduce the idea of waste" by working to re-purpose, recycle and reuse items currently not recyclable or very hard to recycle. TerraCycle also supports communities by donating money to communities who send in items to TerraCycle to be re-purposed.
Since the start of our TerraCycle program in August, we raised $62.14 through TerraCycle, which will be donated to a local non-profit. As part of our Member Survey in February, you will have the opportunity to vote for which local non-profit will get this year's funds. Over time, we look forward to donating the TerraCycle funds to many local non-profits.
Here is a current listing of the items you can keep out the landfill by dropping them in our TerraCycle bins:
1. All Chip Bags
Including: chip bags, tortilla chip bags, pretzel bags, pita chip bags, bagel chip bags, soy crisp bags, and salty snack bags. 2. All Cereal Box Liners

NO cereal boxes. 3. All Bagged Cereal Bags Including: Nature's Path, Malt-O-Meal, and any other bagged cereal. 4. All Bear Naked Product Packaging Accepted Bear Naked packaging includes: Bear Naked brand granola bags, trail mix bags, and granola cookie boxes.
Co-op Classes:
Shop with the Chef: This class series takes participants from buying the ingredients to eating the prepared dishes. Some chefs provide hands-on learning, while others demonstrate their techniques. Everyone leaves with ideas, recipes, and the delicious aftertaste of good food. So far, we have 6 classes available for the new year. Registration for these classes is open and required to attend. For more information please see our calendar and upcoming events. Co-op Conversations: This free class series brings in experts to share their knowledge through discussion, lecture, activities, or demonstration. These free classes do not require registration and cover a wide range of topics including health, wellness, environment, and nutrition. For more information, please see our calendar and upcoming events.
Co-opROCKS!: Co-opROCKS! is part of our outreach program to young adults (high school and college ages). The program is intended to provide young adults with a venue to express their interests (music, art, theater, etc.) in a fun and safe atmosphere. We strive to share our cooperative values through this venue by sourcing local talent and encouraging young adults and the community to support each other and help create this fun event. Admission is FREE!
Next Co-opROCKS!: February 16 from 11 am to 10 pm at Warehouse 21 in Santa Fe.
Volunteer Program: Members who complete one hour of work in our Volunteer Program receive a discount coupon good for 18% off their purchases for a single shopping visit. To become a Co-op Volunteer, you must be a Co-op member and complete our one hour Volunteer Orientation. We have completed our orientations for December and will soon post January orientations on our website calendar.
