HIGHWAY WILDING

Highway Wilding

Harvesting the Rewards
November 2013
Dear Friend of Y2Y,

Summer feels like a blur and fall is similarly whizzing by, but after I read the articles in this newsletter I understand why. We have been working hard and are now harvesting the rewards:

I'm proud of the work we've done and of the above mentioned accomplishments. I'm even more thrilled to let you know that we will have more exciting news to share in the weeks to come.

And in the spirit of Halloween, we include a special feature on the bats of the Flathead River Valley.

For the wild,

The Flathead Wild campaign got a huge boost this month when Teck Resources Limited agreed to purchase 17,668 ac (7,150 ha) of private lands  for conservation purposes.

See how Y2Y and the team helped make it happen.

Y2Y Success Story
Making HWY 93 South Safer
While many animals successfully cross HWY 93 South, the highway can separate population as a whole. Photo: Karsten Heuer
If you've ever driven Highway 93 South through Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, you know it can feel like playing a live video game - dodging deer and other animals as they launch themselves onto the road. But now, sections of the highway are made safer, in part thanks to a Y2Y-funded GPS observation program.

Did you know that a bat can consume up to 1200 insects in one hour.

Bats! They lurk in dark corners, resting by day and flying about by night. For some the mere suggestion of their presence sends shivers down their back. But what is even scarier is the ramifications of not having bats in our forests.

Find out why Flathead bats could help endangered bats...
