The 2016-2017 school year brings a renewed focus on "Recycling" within the Lawrence Township Public Schools. A beautiful visual of recycling is a new mural that adorns the exterior wall of the Slackwood School (SL) Kindergarten building as of May 2016. The mural, entitled "Project Ocean," is a mosaic composed of bottle caps and is an example of recycling and a reminder of its importance.
Jill Lee You, SL art teacher, and Jill Schulman, speech therapist, were the forces behind the project. The goal was to enhance student awareness of harmful bottle caps in our oceans and the importance of recycling.
After parents, families and local community members collected bottle caps for more than a year, SL students took over. All SL young artists (over 280) from grades PreK-3 participated in creating the mural, from drawing and painting to sorting the caps and, finally, to learning how to use an electric drill to screw in the bottle caps.
The students learned how they can create change as well as the significance of reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact in our community.
A partnership of Home Depot of Ewing and the Slackwood Parent Teacher Organization funded the project.
