Caleb Collins
Piece of history flies over Lawrenceville Elementary
Lawrenceville Elementary School (LES) had a special Flag Day celebration on June 14, initiated by an idea and actions of LES 3rd grader Caleb Collins.

Noticing his school's U.S. flag was tattered, Caleb wrote a letter to LES Principal Melissa Lockett asking permission to replace the flag. He stated, "In Cub Scouts we learn it is disrespectful to our country to fly a torn flag because Americans have sacrificed their lives for our country." He offered to replace the flag with a flag he purchased and which was flown over the most decorated ship in U.S. Naval history, the U.S.S. Battleship New Jersey.

Caleb also offered to ask a former crew member of the ship, veteran Ken Kersch, to attend the celebration. Caleb met Mr. Kersch while on an overnight stay with his Cub Scout pack on the battleship.

All LES grade levels, a few members of Caleb's Cub Scout pack, and Mr. Kersch attended the special ceremony on June 14. Mr. Kersch presented Mrs. Lockett with a plaque featuring a piece of the original decking of the U.S.S. Battleship New Jersey.

LIS teacher/author to launch second children's book
Our staff members display their talents in and outside the classroom. Mark Dennion, 6th grade language arts teacher at Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS), is launching his second children's book, The References: A Superhero Tale, on July 13. As described on Amazon: A NEW KIND OF SUPERHERO HAS ARRIVED.... Richard Shanary isn't the best student. In fact, when it comes to English, he's struggling for that "C" average his karate scholarship requires.
