LIS students sweep essay contest
Three Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS) students took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Memorial Day Essay Contest sponsored by the Lawrence Township Recreation Department and American Legion Post 414.
 
Kate McCann, grade 6, won 1st place and $100, Leanne Griffiths, grade 5, won 2nd place and $75, and Cole Verga, grade 5, won 3rd place and $50. Kate, Leanne and Cole were invited to participate in the Memorial Day events that were held at Lawrence Veteran's Park on May 18.

Congratulations to Lawrence High School (LHS) senior Robert Liu for being selected as a winner of a 2016 National Merit $2500 Scholarship!

Girls track captures first sectional title in 37 years
Congratulations to the LHS Girls Track & Field team, this season's CVC Patriot Division Champs as well as the winners of the 2016 NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 3 Sectional Championship! This marks the program's first sectional title since 1979. 
 
The girls also won sectional titles in four events: The 4x100 relay team (Kelsey Holt, Mijah Collier, Sataya Gordon and Dominique Peters) took 1st place and broke a school record in 48.51 seconds. The 4x400 relay team (Kelsey Holt, Mijah Collier, Sataya Gordon and Sofia Centeno) won their event in 4:02.75, nearly 4 seconds ahead of the runner-up. In individual events, Mijah Collier won both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles.
 
The top six athletes from each of the Group 2 and 3 sections around the state, along with the top eight finishers from each event in the Non-Public B sections, will head to Northern Burlington on June 3-4 for the NJSIAA Group Championships. Read more in this article from The Times of Trenton.


CVC coaches give rookie golfer honorable mention nod
Sam Koevenig, a freshman on the Lawrence High School (LHS) Golf team, received a 2016 All-CVC Honorable Mention award from the CVC Golf Coaches Association.
LHS students earn Eagle Scout rank
One current and five former Lawrence High School (LHS) students from Boy Scout Troop 27 attended a Court of Honor on May 21 for earning the rank of Eagle Scout. The boys organized and completed individual service projects in the community, as well as served in leadership roles in the troop.
 
LHS graduate Sujay Shetty, freshman at the University of Michigan, renovated and repaired a damaged classroom in the ECV community center. Nick Diefenbach, freshman at Johnson and Wales University, designed and constructed an enclosure with 3 platforms for beehives at the Lawrence Nature Center. Dorian Armstrong, freshman at TCNJ, oversaw the demolition of an old shed and the construction of a new one at the Lawrence Nature Center. Jake Verga, freshman at Arcadia University, constructed a shed and ramp in Central Park for the Little League to store equipment. John Waaben, freshman at American University, planned and created Memorial Tree Park in Maidenhead Meadows by planting Dawn Redwood trees and constructing benches along a section of the Lawrence-Hopewell Trail. Ben Reitz, LHS senior attending Stevenson University in the fall, continued the Memorial Tree Park by raising money and planting more trees. The extra money he raised was donated to the Lawrence Nature Center for a new telescope.


LTPS staff members Sean Carney, Jeff Verga and Sue Diefenbach were also presented with mentor pins at the ceremony.

LMS 101 - attend evening meetings from the comfort of your home
Lawrence Middle School (LMS) recently presented its annual Middle School 101 evening, which is a specially designed program for parents of rising 7th graders.
 
Principal Mindy Milavsky, along with supervisors Dr. Mary Dillon, Heidi Rosen and Yvette Panosowich, discussed with parents the programs, curriculum, and unique opportunities for students at LMS.
 
New this year was the option of watching the presentation at home on LTPS-TV (available through Comcast Channel 19 or Verizon Channel 37). The new format was added to include parents who otherwise may not have been able to attend. The recorded presentation is also available hereDue to overwhelmingly positive feedback, we look forward to offering more evening events through LTPS-TV.

Mini Golf & Driving Range Fundraiser for SHH
The LHS chapter of Students Helping Honduras (SHH) will host a mini golf and driving range event at the Pennington Golf Center from 10AM to 9PM on Saturday, June 11. 


Bring this flyer and voucher to the event and 25% of all proceeds coming in that day will go directly to support SHH in the building of the Jorge Fidel Duron Middle School in northern Honduras. 


SHH at LHS will be funding AND building this school, and once completed it will be painted Red and White in honor of LHS and all students who have been a part of the fundraising. A plaque will name LHS, as well as all students who have raised $250+ through their fundraising efforts.

Girls Scouts info session
Does your daughter want to be a girl scout? Now is the perfect time to sign up so she can be placed in a troop for the fall. Come to a Girl Scout info session on Saturday, June 4 from 3-5PM at the Lawrence Community Center and see what it's all about. See flyer.

8th Annual Kids Marathon
Start planning now to take part in the 8th annual Kids Marathon, hosted by Princeton HealthCare System Community Education & Outreach and Princeton Fitness & Wellness Center. 


Over the course of 10 weeks, Kids Marathon participants complete 25-miles. Everything from sports activities to walking to school counts toward the finish line! They all come together to finish the last 1.2 miles of the marathon on September 10.
 
More than 500 children are expected to participate in the event, which has one clear goal in mind - making fitness fun for area children in preschool through eighth grade, while raising awareness about healthy living. See flyer to register now.
