Field #5 soil contamination clean up is underway
The contaminated area on Field #5 is the smallest area of contamination. Clean up is underway. The field may become available again to Lawrence Middle and High Schools by the end of today. This means all fields along Gainsboro Rd. will be available.

Sophie Slutzky selected as Governor's Scholar
Lawrence High School (LHS) junior Sophie Slutzky has been selected by a panel of professors, researchers, and educators at Rutgers University to participate in the Governor's School of Engineering & Technology at the Rutgers University School of Engineering this summer. Qualified high school juniors who possess outstanding skills and display unusual abilities and interests in the field are nominated by their schools for acceptance into the program.
 
As a Governor's Scholar, Sophie will spend four weeks on campus taking five academic classes, completing an intensive research and/or design project in a group of 3-5 students, going on site visits to local corporations, and meeting equally talented peers and professionals from across the state. Jane Lin is the 2016 NJSIAA Scholar Athlete
Congratulations to Lawrence High School (LHS) senior Jane Lin for being named the 2016 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Scholar Athlete for LHS. Jane, who currently ranks 3rd in her class, plays tennis and lacrosse for the Cardinals.
Muzi named 2016 Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow
In recognition of her commitment to global education, Jeanne Muzi, LTPS K-3 Gifted and Talented (G&T) teacher was selected as one of the 2016 Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows. Every year, K-12 educators are considered for this professional development opportunity that allows them to bring immersive geographic learning experiences back to their classrooms and communities. Jeanne is one of 35 highly respected educators from the United States and Canada to receive this honor.
 
In June, Jeanne will embark on an 11 day Lindblad voyage aboard the National Geographic Explorer to the Arctic Svalbard for a one-of-a-kind field experience, accompanied by Lindblad-National Geographic expedition experts. Read more in this news release.
LHS high performers qualify for National Merit program
Seven Lawrence High School (LHS) students who took the 2015 PSAT/NMSQT have been designated as high scorers with outstanding academic potential and are eligible to enter the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program in the fall. 

From approximately 1.5 million entrants, 50,000 students nationwide were identified as high scorers. From these 50,000 students, 16,000 will be named Semifinalists and 34,000 will be recognized as Commended Students. Semifinalists will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for one of 7,400 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in 2017.
 
LHS students who will be recognized as either Commended Students or Semifinalists in the fall are:  Aanchal Aich, Mohin Chanpura, Thomas Lavery, Ruchika Moturi, Rithvik Nair, Sophie Slutzky, and Sidhant Swami.
Grade level Science & Engineering Fair winners share awarded projects with Board of Education
Lawrence's Science & Engineering Fair was held February 20, 2016 in the Lawrence High School Commons. Each grade level winner showcased their projects to Lawrence Board of Education (BOE) members at their BOE meeting April 13, 2016.

Casey Ryu receives NSLI-Y scholarship
LHS senior Casey Ryu has been selected to receive a National Service for Language Initiative (NSLI) for Youth Scholarship to attend a 6.5 week program in Seoul, South Korea. The program emphasizes rapid language acquisition in a language immersion environment by combining in-class language instruction, a comprehensive cultural program, and homestays. 

By the end of the program, participants will have achieved progress in language proficiency and gained a deeper understanding of the host country culture. Casey will participate in a pre-departure orientation in Seattle, Washington and then attend Korean classes for up to five hours per day at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, Korea for a total of six weeks. Students will also participate in cultural enhancement and community service activities with other NSLI-Y students and host country peers.

The Lawrence High School (LHS) Band and Concert/Madrigal Choirs performed at the Trenton Thunder opening night game on April 7. Alumni News
Lawrence High alumnus Gordon Wolf qualified for the NCAA Division I National Wrestling finals held in Madison Square Garden. 

Gordon is a red-shirt freshman wrestling for Lehigh University. He defeated 14th seed Alex Meyer from Iowa University in the first round of the tournament before being sent to the wrestlebacks. He was eventually eliminated from the tournament by 3rd seed Blaise Butler from Missouri. Great job, Gordon!

In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the LTPS jazz bands will perform in concert with guest musician Ron Kerber of the Philly Pops on Thursday, April 21, at 7PM in the Lawrence High School (LHS) auditorium. Read more about Ron Kerber here.

PreK lottery applications (low income) accepted now through May 11
Lawrence Township Public Schools is now accepting applications for low-income families for the district's 2016-2017 Preschool Program for 4-year-olds. Students will be selected randomly for openings at Ben Franklin, Lawrenceville and Slackwood Elementary Schools. This is a comprehensive program that services typically developing, low income, and special needs 4-year-old children.
 
Pre-school lottery applications are available at the Board of Education office (2565 Princeton Pike), Ben Franklin, Lawrenceville and Slackwood elementary schools main offices, and online here. See news release for eligibility and application requirements.
It's time to register for Kindergarten
If your child will be five years old on or before October 1, 2016, he/she is eligible to attend Kindergarten in Lawrence Township Public Schools beginning in September 2016. Begin the pre-registration process here.
BF Family Fun Night
Join your Ben Franklin Elementary School (BF) friends at Family Fun Night on April 15 at the Boys and Girls Club Community Center. Bring this flyer and a portion of the entrance fee will benefit the BF PTO.

MCPCA College Fair
The Mercer County Professional Counselors Association (MCPCA) will sponsor a College Fair on Tuesday, April 19. From 6-8PM at Mercer County Community College (MCCC), West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Rd.

Lawrence Leopards U-14 Girls Competitive Soccer Tryouts
