LHS math whizzes are AMC high scorers
In February, about 80 Lawrence High School (LHS) students in grades 9-12 had the opportunity to participate in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). The AMC is a nationally recognized competition and qualified students have the potential to earn college scholarship awards. Students with qualifying scores on the school level test are invited to continue participating in a series of examinations that culminate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Although LHS students did not advance to the next level of competition, the two top scorers, David Horne and Benjamin Johnson, were recognized at the March LHS Student of the Month celebration, where Math & Science supervisor Yvette Panasowich awarded each student with a pin from AMC recognizing their accomplishments. David earned the school's highest score on the 9-10 grade exam and Ben earned the school's highest score on the 11-12 grade exam.

LTPS named a Best Community for Music Education for 8th time
Lawrence Township Public Schools (LTPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. LTPS joins 476 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016.

This is the 8th time, and the 4th consecutive year, that LTPS has earned this designation: 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. LTPS music teachers Melissa Clark, Tanya Damon, Deborah Lingel, and Ron Taglairino reviewed this year's application for submission in November.

The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, LTPS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
