QuickNews
January 21, 2016
Greetings!

How do you determine if schools are closed?
By all accounts, it appears we will get a taste of winter this weekend. It probably won't be the only time we get a visit from old man winter. How do you determine the status of schools? Are we closed? Do we have a 2-hour delayed opening? What about an early dismissal?

The Superintendent or her designee decides when school hours must be modified. Reasons for a change in school hours include inclement weather, poor road or walkway conditions, and emergencies.

Whether it's weather related or due to an emergency, a change in school hours is reported via ways listed below and, generally, in this order.

Water main breaks
We received two advisories from Lawrence Township this morning about water main breaks on Princeton Pike. One break is between Ben Franklin School and Franklin Corner Road. Lawrence Township Office of Emergency Management requests that you do not travel along Princeton Pike between Franklin Corner Road and Ben Franklin School.  This section of the road will be closed until further notice.

You can access Ben Franklin School using Princeton Pike if you travel to the school from the southern part of town, such as turning north on Princeton Pike from Darrah Lane.

A second water main break also was reported for the southbound lane of Princeton Pike between Carr Ave. and Lawrence Road (206). Repairmen were on the scene when we received this advisory earlier today.

Please allow extra time and use alternate routes.

Some of our school buses may experience delays.  We will try our best to maintain our regular schedule.

Ryan Morris earns Eagle Scout Award
Congratulations to Ryan Morris, Lawrence High School (LHS) sophomore, for earning the highest advancement award from the Boy Scouts of America - the Eagle Scout Award! Ryan is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. His community service project was to design and build a walkway at Ben Franklin Elementary School, the elementary school he attended. The pathway, which provides a dry route leading toward the stream access point, particularly benefits the school's StreamKeeper Club whose members learn about the environment and ecology. Students serve the community at MLK Day of Service
Lawrence Middle School (LMS) students, parents, seniors and staff came together to provide service for the community during the 1st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 18. The event was designed to provide service opportunities for students and to offer computer and technical assistance to seniors and community members. In addition to the student-run technology classes, participants also worked together on a variety of service projects.

The event was well attended with over 80 students, staff, and community members volunteering their time. LMS principal Mindy Milavsky stated, "It's important that our students know who Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was, and that they know they can honor his legacy by serving on MLK Day. We reminded our students that we can make Dr. King's teachings come alive by making 'MLK Day a day on and not a day off'." Read the news release here.
