MCCU Gallery highlights works of LHS art teachers and students
Three Lawrence High School (LHS) art teachers - Khalilah Sabree, Sean Carney, and Cheryl Eng - along with LHS students Andrew Baicker, James Boushell, Samantha Gardocki, Barbara Gruszka, Emily Herrera, Bryan Lemus, and Benjamin Reitz, have works on exhibit at "Passing the Palette: Arts Educators and Their Students," at the Mercer County Community College (MCCU) Gallery.

The exhibit, on display from now through December 8, showcases the talent, creativity and significance of art instruction in and around Mercer County by bringing together the artworks of area students and the dedicated teachers who instruct and inspire them.

LHS students challenged to "Be the Change"
Lawrence High School (LHS) students participated in Challenge Day on November 10 and 11, when they were inspired to "Be the Change" they wish to see in the world, and challenge others to do the same. The program was funded through a grant from the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF).
Challenge Day is a program designed to break down barriers between students, stop bullying, and encourage students to make relationships outside their typical group of friends. During the two day program, leaders from the California-based Challenge Day program used highly interactive and energetic activities to guide 176 students and 48 adult volunteers through a carefully designed exploration of the ways people separate from each other, and modeled tools for creating connection and building community. Breaking from the norms of the traditional "workshop" environment, Challenge Day activities included one-on-one discussions, small group meetings, games, and quite a bit of dancing! The participants plan to use Challenge Day's valuable lessons and spread its message as encouragement for all students to continue to 'Be the Change."

BOE members Jo Ann Groeger and Laura Waters view students' inventions at the November 11 meeting.
Invent-a-Mania
Last June before school dismissed for summer, approximately 300 third graders were told of an Invent-a-Mania project they could do over the summer. About 100 students took a flyer describing the project and 13 students actually submitted inventions when they returned to school in September. The students who participated are: Pavana Gujjar, Emily McCann, Samantha Lambdin, Julia Doliwa, Petra Doherty, Harper Robinson, Riya Sharma, Graham Wild, Julia Ciccone, Mirella Ionescu, Sophia Gilli, James Sannella and Kiki Nweje.

Gifted and Talented teachers Jessica Heller and Jeanne Muzi introduced the project outcomes to the Board of Education (BOE) at its November 11 meeting. Nine of the 13 students unveiled their creations to the BOE, district administrators, and others on hand at the meeting. The young inventors should secure patents quickly!

LHS Interact Club brings Fall Fest fun to the HomeFront Family Campus
On November 11, LHS Interact club members welcomed autumn with "Fall Fest" fun at the Homefront Family Campus in Ewing, NJ. The LHS student volunteers celebrated with HomeFront children and their families with music, dancing, face painting, tattoos, games and refreshments - the "pin the feather on the turkey" game and glow stick necklaces were particularly popular!
The LHS Interact Club at HomeFront

Just two months ago, over 500 visitors from all walks of life celebrated the grand opening of the new HomeFront Family Campus at 101 Celia Way in Ewing. Supporters, volunteers, and former clients crowded the bright hallways and rooms, eager for a first-hand look at this new "village of healing and hope" for families living in the shadow of homelessness. The Interact club at LHS is proud and privileged to have worked with HomeFront over the years.

Interact, Lawrence High School's community service club, is advised by LHS English teacher Jill Vaughn, who provides support and guidance to this largely self-governing group of student volunteers. The members of Interact work to tackle the issues in the community about which they care most and strive to create positive change. If you would like to connect with Interact - either as a student volunteer or as a community member - please contact Mrs. Vaughn at jvaughn@ltps.org.

Nine LHS seniors offered instant college/university acceptance at HBCU Fair
Twenty-four enthusiastic Lawrence High School (LHS) juniors and seniors, accompanied by guidance counselors Doreen Welsh and Marjorie Cobin, attended the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Fair On November 17 at Susquehanna Bank Arena in Camden, NJ.

The fair is an annual event for students to speak with admission representatives from HBCU's around the country. Seniors also have the opportunity to present their transcripts and test scores for provisional "instant decision" acceptances if they meet individual school admission criteria. Nine students received acceptances to one or more colleges/universities with one student, Tahesia Reid, the recipient of a full-ride scholarship.

LHS DECA students inspired to help others at COLT Conference
Several LHS DECA club members attended the New Jersey DECA COLT (Chapter Officer Leadership Training) Conference in Cherry Hill in mid-October, where they heard an inspirational talk by Keith Hawkins. Once an inhabitant of a rough area in Los Angeles, Hawkins now travels the country as an inspirational speaker, presenting to roughly 400,000 each year.

Hawkins encouraged students to exit their comfort zones. He claims it is in uncomfortable situations when students are able to maximize their learning. Student feedback related that Hawkins taught many lessons that day but perhaps the most memorable was when he spoke of helping others.

DECA officers at COLT Conference: (Front) Daryl Hoehne, Alexandrea Manalo, Jennifer Zoll, Nelle Evans, Ally Wakeman, (name withheld), (Back) Michael Marsh, Ian Rosenast, Justin Morris, Audley Clark, Fawad Yousufzai, Kyle Springsteen, Nick Ciuffreda

Prior to Hawkins' time on stage, students had listened to Rod Hirsch, executive director of Operation Shoebox NJ. Hirsch stressed the importance of helping soldiers overseas and related how his organization sends care packages of donated supplies to soldiers in need.

After Hirsch finished, Hawkins took time to reiterate the importance of helping others. He asserted that "you may forget the others you help, but the others you help will never forget you," and encouraged students to get involved.
