LHS Operation Smile Club attends leadership conference -
club member Olivia Waaben receives Memorial Award
Seventeen members of the Lawrence High School (LHS) Operation Smile Club traveled to California from July 20 -July 24 for the Operation Smile International Student Leadership Conference. Here they met other students from 27 different countries. Operation Smile is an international children's medical charity that provides free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries to those in developing or underdeveloped nations who suffer from facial deformities.

The theme of the conference was In:Vision 2020, which challenged students to think about who they will be in 2020, what type of change they will create, and why that change will be important to them. Students heard from inspirational speakers including authors, record executives, CEOs, and TIME's 2014 Person of the Year, Katie Meyler. They also learned more about the organization, developed leadership skills, shared fundraising ideas, and participated in team games, challenges and other activities.

LHS junior Olivia Waaben, president of the Lawrence High School Operation Smile club and vice president of Public Relations for the Operation Smile New Jersey Regional Leadership Council, was the first ever recipient of the Operation Smile Memorial Award. This recognition awarded her a scholarship for Mission Training, an Operation Smile Mission, and the International Student Leadership Conference 2016, also in California.
