Board approves administrative appointments

At last night's meeting, the Board of Ed (BOE)approved the Superintendent's recommendation to appoint Lawrenceville Elementary (LES) Principal Judy Bronston as Director of Personnel and Administrative Services.  Judy will replace current Director Rebecca Gold who retires August 1, 2015  Next steps include reviewing applications and conducting interviews for the LES Principal position and appointing a new Principal on the June 10th BOE agenda.


 
Also last night, the BOE approved LIS Assistant Principal Cindy Westhead as the LIS Principal, effective July 1, 2015  Cindy replaces current Principal Dave Adam who will move to Lawrence High as Principal.

Wilcox wins 3rd place in NJ School Bus Safety Poster Contest

Lydia Wilcox, 8th grader at Lawrence Middle School (LMS), won 3rd place in Division 3 (grades 6-8) of the 2015 New Jersey School Bus Safety Poster Contest, sponsored by School Transportation Supervisors (STS) of NJ. This year's theme was "Bully Free Zone!" which LMS Language Arts teacher Dar Sandler incorporated into Cardinal Time lessons about respectful, responsible and ready behaviors. As 3rd place winner, Lydia will receive a $50 gift card, to be presented by STS on June 5.

LHS DECA students win top awards at International Conference

Eighteen Lawrence High School (LHS) DECA students qualified to attend the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida on April 24-29. During the school year, approximately 120,000 students take part in DECA's competitive events program, allowing them to compete for local and regional titles. The competitions are designed to simulate real-life business scenarios and test students' academic understanding and skills development. The top state and provincial winners put their talents to the test during the program's final round of competition in Orlando, where nearly 17,000 students vied for international honors. Four of the eighteen LHS DECA students who qualified to attend the International Conference were recognized as Top 10 and Top 16 finalists in their events!

LMS students display negotiation skills at Model UN Conference 

In March, the Lawrence Middle School (LMS) Model United Nations Club competed in the 10th Annual Middle School Model UN Conference held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. LMS students represented the Dominican Republic and competed with over 80 schools and 1,200 students from the United States and all over the world. Several students successfully negotiated their resolutions through the United Nations approval process and were accepted by their committees.

 

Grace Dismukes, Charlotte Bohra, Sebastian Centeno, and Rahul Paleja won "Best Position Paper" for the World Health and United Nations Development Program Committees.  Nicholas Ciuffreda and Matthew McChesney took home an "Honorable Mention" in the WHO committee and Hugo Ruano and Anis Chihoub earned the title of "Outstanding Delegation" in the UN Population Fund Committee.  LMS Social Studies teacher, Dan Christel, is the Model UN Club advisor.

LTEF continues its generous support of LTPS

Wow! Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) once again awarded generous funding to Lawrence Township Public Schools (LTPS). At last night's Board of Education meeting, LTEF President Kelly Bidle presented $100,000 to the district towards improving some science labs at Lawrence High. Additionally, LTEF awarded $20,000 from Bristol-Myers Squibb for hands-on science equipment for the labs. Instructional Services Supervisor Yvette Panasowich coordinated the award request. LTPS appreciates and applauds LTEF's ongoing, substantial support.

LHS Career Academies Applebee's Flapjack Fundraiser
The LHS Career Academies will host a Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee's, Route 1 in Lawrenceville, on Saturday, May 16 from 8-10AM. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, milk, juice, and coffee. Tickets are $5 for students/children, $10 for adults and can be purchased at the door or in advance from Mick Cimorelli at mcimorelli@ltps.org. Proceeds will benefit the LHS Career Academies.

Eye injuries are the leading cause of preventable blindness and visual impairment in children, and most injuries occurring in school-aged children are sports-related. The fact sheet, developed by the New Jersey Department of Education, includes critical information to promote the prevention of eye injuries as well as recommendations for the appropriate management of eye injuries that may occur. Read the fact sheet here.

Slackwood School students who have demonstrated the Trustworthy Pillar of Character are honored in a brief assembly. At the conclusion of this program, a class is given the reward of doing something unusual to Principal Billy.
