Reading - A Family Affair

Earlier in February Eldridge Park School (EPS) Latinos Unidos students shared an exciting evening with their parents. Students listened to stories read to them by kindergarten teacher, Lisa Adams. Teacher Eileen Bright (photo, right) worked with the students as they made sticker charts for their parents to encourage parents to read to them.  The parents listened to a guest speaker from PEI Kids who shared information about community resources. The evening ended with students choosing two books, provided by an NJEA grant, to take home.

Latinos Unidos evenings, which occur four times a year, are an opportunity for EPS staff and volunteers to provide additional resources to Eldridge Park Latino parents and students to guide them towards success.  ESL teacher Angeline Sturgis planned and organized this fun, informative evening.

Cull Qualifies for State Geography Bee - First from LMS

Simon Cull, 7th grader at Lawrence Middle School (LMS), was notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists---the first ever from LMS---eligible to compete in the 2015 New Jersey National Geographic State Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 27th year. School Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state Bees.
