LMS Art Students Display Talent and Character
Jennifer Skorupa's 7th and 8th grade art classes had an eventful October. Students kicked off the month with a photography reception at the Lawrence Public Library, showcasing the first "This is Lawrence" photography exhibit. Twenty students participated by submitting beautiful images of Lawrence Township which were on display in the library through November 22. Seventh grade art students participated in the "3rd Annual Art Class Canned Goods Donation." Students worked on a still life study inspired by pop artist Andy Warhol by observing a Campbell's Soup can and recreating a drawing in his style.
Afterwards, over 80 soup cans and additional canned and boxed goods were donated to HomeFront.
If you drove by LMS on October 10, you may have wondered why all the blue balloons were outside. As closure for the anti-bullying Week of Respect, Mrs. Skorupa, along with fellow teachers and art students, created a balloon sculpture which displayed all LMS students' pledges to help make their school a better place. Each pledge card was attached to one of the 100 blue balloons representing anti-bullying that were on display. Students had the opportunity during the school day to go outside with their classes to read each other's messages. |
Stoneback Wins "Predict the Future Now" Contest
Cassidy Stoneback, 8th grader at Lawrence Middle School (LMS), won first place in the Edison Innovation Foundation's "Predict the Future Now" contest. After researching biochemical engineering and reading a current event article about quorum-sensing bacteria, Cassidy won for her prediction that antibiotics would be obsolete 50 years from now. She envisions a post-antibiotic world where bacteria are stopped by manipulating their DNA, basically shutting them on and off. Her essay earned top honors and a gift card for $50. Read more here. |
