Global Explorer Visits LIS 5th Grade

Earlier this month, LIS 5th grade teacher Dan Brennan hosted a special visitor from London, Dr. Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop of Digital Explorer.  Jamie has done extensive research on the Arctic polar region and coral reef regions around the world.  During his LIS visit, four 5th grade classes conducted hands-on experiments with Jamie.  Two classes learned about coral reef polyps and two learned about the Arctic, rising sea levels, and Artic food chain. One student commented, "Yesterday was great!  I never had the thought that science is so cool!  After meeting Jamie, I want to be an Arctic biologist.  It was a very educational experience."  The classes will have an opportunity to Skype with Jamie later this year while he studies coral reefs in Fiji.

A Field Trip Back in Time

Slackwood School 2nd graders recently embarked on a journey back in time when they were invited to visit the historical Anderson-Capner House as part of their Lawrence Township history lessons in Social Studies. Homeowners Kathlinda and Gary Saretzky strive to maintain the historical aspects of the house.

Students, accompanied by teachers Sharon Civil, Kathy Bierman, and Amy Valentino, were greeted outside by two colonial women (Kathy Saretzky and her niece garbed in complete colonial attire) working in the garden. They learned about the original people of this area, the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans, as well as the artifacts that were found on the Anderson-Capner property.

Inside the house, students learned about life in colonial times by viewing toys of the era and the different tools students used at school. The kitchen fireplace, bed warmer and ginger snap cookies were highlights, as well.

LHS Academies hold Pink-Out Day
The color PINK was a hot topic at Lawrence High School (LHS) yesterday as the Freshman and Sophomore Academies held a Pink-Out Day to raise cancer awareness. Money collections during lunch raised $158 for the American Cancer Society. Alyssa Katz and Stefanie Tziarri, Freshman and Sophomore Academy leaders respectively, led the event.
