Slackwood Families Attend MCCC Open House
On October 18th Slackwood (SL) guidance counselor Melanie Seaman led a group of 24 adults, teenagers and children in SL families on a trip to a public Open House at Mercer County Community College (MCCC). Mrs. Seaman, president of the Mercer County Professional Counselor Association, arranged the trip and secured funding for the bus through MCCC. Savita Bambrohlia, director of admissions, arranged to have translators to speak to the SL families in Spanish. The group was escorted into a private room where they could ask questions and learn about the MCCC programs and their benefits for the parents and their children. Via the trip, SL students in grades 1-3 were able to visit a college campus and learn the importance of going to college. One parent said, "I am going to come here for ESL classes!" Other parents remarked they currently attend class at Mercer or had taken ESL classes there in the past. Previously Mrs. Seaman ran a nine-week program for parents called "Realizing the American Dream," designed to assist families in preparing their children now for college in the future. The program was funded by the Lawrence Township Education Foundation. |
LHS Students Attend TCNJ's Celebration of Women in Science
Four Lawrence High School (LHS) science students recently accompanied STEM supervisor, Yvette Panasowich, to The College of New Jersey's (TCNJ) Celebration of Women in Science. Here's what the students thought about the trip: "The four of us are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to attend TCNJ's celebration of women in science. Our favorite part of the celebration was the Panel Discussion. Here, we learned about the different stem-oriented careers that TCNJ alumni pursued through a "Q&A-style" session. We were very much inspired and highly influenced by the vast multitude of opportunities available at TCNJ. We were also introduced to the Dean of Science, Jeffery Osborn, who spoke to us on a very personal level and we really appreciated it. Thanks for everything, Mrs. Panasowich!"
