National History Day Update
Charlie Christoffersen on the steps of the Capitol
Lawrence Middle School (LMS) students Rhea Pathak and Charlie Christoffersen were among the top .5% of students who qualified for National History Day (NHD), June 15-19, at the University of Maryland from thousands of students who entered projects into the competition. Eight-nine Junior Individual Documentaries competed with the LMS entries for judging; 14 documentaries were selected for the final round, and the top 3 documentaries were chosen as national winners. Although neither LMS student moved into the final round, they were honored to participate in the prestigious event, which was attended by almost 3,000 students (Junior and Senior Divisions) from all 50 states and Puerto Rico, plus American schools from Guam, American Samoa, China, and Southeast Asia.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) sponsored a Congressional Breakfast on June 18 to honor select National History Day students. Teachers, parents, NHD state coordinators, students, humanities leaders, and members of Congress were present to celebrate the achievements of the students. Charlie Christoffersen was one of thirty-five invited students in attendance at the breakfast.

Priscilla Taylor, LMS G&T Specialist and NHD coordinator relates that during the three day competition, word spread that LMS swept the top 3 spots of the Junior Individual Documentary category at the State level of competition. Ms. Taylor, Charlie and Rhea received accolades from teachers all over the country as well as from distinguished guests at the Capitol Hill breakfast, such as Susan Griffin, the Executive Director of the National Council for Social Studies, who congratulated Charlie and Ms. Taylor on their success at States. They were told that no other school has swept a category before!
